Softball Sweeps Doubleheader From Sweet Briar

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Bridgewater College picked up a pair of conference victories Saturday afternoon as the Eagles blanked Sweet Briar in both ends of a doubleheader. Bridgewater won the opener 9-0 and took the second game 13-0. Both games were ended after five innings.

The Eagles took control of the first game with six runs in the first inning. With one out, Katie Merhout singled, stole second and moved to third on a base hit by Mikalia Guard. Guard stole second before Anna Patterson chased both runners home with a double for a 2-0 Eagles' lead.  Patterson moved to third on a single by Lacey Shifflett and then scored on Stephanie Carroll's single to center to make it 3-0. A single by Carlita Tibbs loaded the sacks before consecutive run-scoring base hits by Brooke Louden, Ryan Kirtner and Victoria Gontarz pushed the margin to 6-0.

Bridgewater tacked on its final three runs in the fourth inning. Merhout led off with a single and scored on a triple to right by Guard, making the score 7-0. Guard scored on a double by Dawson and Jessica Dawson crossed the plate on a triple by Carroll for a 9-0 Eagles' advantage.

Louden went the distance in the circle to pick up the win. She allowed three hits while striking out eight and walking two.

Eleven different players contributed to Bridgewater's 16-hit attack with Guard leading the way with a 3-for-4 day at the plate.

Bridgewater scored in each inning to win the second game 13-0.

Guard put the Eagles on the board with a run-scoring double in the first inning and two more runs in the second make it 3-0. In the second, Lauren Wilson plated a run with a groundout and Guard drove in a run with a single.

Bridgewater tacked on an unearned run in the third inning and a four-run outburst in the fourth put the Eagles on top 8-0.

With one out in the fourth, Merhout walked, stole second base and scored on a double by Guard, making the score 5-0. Guard raced home on a single to left field by Tibbs for a 6-0 Eagles' lead. With two outs, Dawson singled to put runners on the corners and Kirtner drove both runners home with a double to left for an 8-0 advantage.

The Eagles scored their final five runs in the top of the fifth inning. Singles by Wilson and Allison Patrick and a walk to Hannah Nyquist loaded the bases with no puts. Wilson scored on a wild pitch and Patrick crossed home on an infield error, making the score 10-0. Guard then delivered a two-run double to left center to make it 12-0. With the bases loaded and two outs, Wilson drew a walk to force home a run for the final 13-0 margin.

Carolyn Campbell went the distance in the circle, finishing with a two-hit shutout. She struck out five and walked one.

Guard was 4-for-4 and drove in five runs to lead the offense. She was 7-for-8 in the two games with six RBIs and three runs scored.

The Eagles are now 7-13 overall and 2-2 in the ODAC. Bridgewater returns to action Tuesday when the Eagles host Randolph-Macon for a conference doubleheader. The first game begins at 3:00 p.m.
