BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team swept past Sweet Briar in a non-conference doubleheader, winning 12-1 (five innings) in game one and 14-1 (five innings) in the second meeting on Saturday afternoon at Fulk Field.
Game one: Bridgewater 12, Sweet Briar 1 (five innings)
The Eagles (6-16) registered 15 hits as a team, and Brianna Cox and Hannah Trala combined to hold the Vixens (0-12) to only one hit.
Cox (W, 3-6) recorded three strikeouts, one hit and one run through two innings, and Trala posted five strikeouts in three innings of relief.
At the plate, Cox was only a single away from hitting for the cycle. She finished the game 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI.
In the top of the first, Cox doubled down the right line to plate Hannah Nyquist, tripled to left center during the second inning and belted an inside-the-park home run in the fourth.
Freshman Lindsey Talley went 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI as she led off the second inning with an inside-the-park home run to notch her first career homer.
Carlita Tibbs had two hits, reached home plate twice and drove in three runs, while Lacey Shifflett produced two hits, two RBI and a run.
Senior Brooke Throckmorton also completed the game with multiple hits after going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
Game two: Bridgewater 14, Sweet Briar 1 (five innings)
Sophomore Amber Wood (W, 2-3) tossed four innings of one-hit ball and fanned three batters, while Jessica Abramson tallied a strikeout during an inning of relief to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Shifflett was 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs, and Throckmorton added two hits and three runs.
The Eagles offense exploded with a seven-run inning in the bottom of the fourth. Cox singled up the middle to plate freshman Victoria Gontarz and a hit by pitch with the bases loaded brought home Nyquist.
On the next at bat, Shifflett knocked a two-RBI single and sophomore Jessica Dawson followed up with a walk to load the bases again. Wharton crossed home plate on a passed ball and Dawson eventually scored on a wild pitch.
Before closing the fourth inning, the Eagles tacked on one more run following another passed ball.
The Eagles return to the diamond tomorrow with an ODAC doubleheader on the road against Emory and Henry at 1:00 p.m.
