Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College Eagles fell twice to ODAC rival Randolph, 3-2 and 4-0, on Sunday afternoon at Fulk Field. Prior to first pitch, the Eagles celebrated the four-year careers of seniors Brianna Cox and Brooke Throckmorton.
Game one: Randolph 3, Bridgewater 2
Despite winning the hitting battle 9-to-6, Bridgewater (7-26, 2-13 ODAC) ) gave up two critical runs in the top of the seventh to allow Randolph (19-15, 6-10 ODAC) to steal game one.
Cox tossed 6.1 solid innings by fanning five batters and allowing only three runs on six hits, but didn't get the run support needed to earn the win.
Cox allowed no hits through the first two innings and gave up only one run in the third inning after escaping a bases loaded jam.
In the bottom of the third, freshman Victoria Gontarz led off with a single and advanced to second on an illegal pitch. Freshman Lindsey Talley singled on a bunt and Gontarz made it to third base, but the Wildcats retired the next three batters to leave two runners on base.
Randolph loaded the bases again in the top of the fifth with one out, but Rebecca Montgomery lined out to first base and Dianne Davis flied out to centerfield.
The Wildcats threatened to score once more in the sixth with a runner in scoring position and no outs, but Cox struck out the next three batters to hold the score to 1-0.
The Eagles put runs on the scoreboard to gain the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Back-to-back singles put runners on base and Talley knocked a two-RBI single up the middle to give Bridgewater a 2-1 advantage heading into the seventh.
The Wildcats responded with an RBI double and sacrifice fly to regain the lead in the top of the seventh, and then put the Eagles down in order in the final inning for the victory.
Talley finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and Gontarz posted two hits.
Game two: Randolph 4, Bridgewater 0
In a complete game, Gracyn Allen-Ingle recorded five runs, two walks and two strikeouts to hold the Eagles scoreless in the second meeting.
Eagles' starter Hannah Trala was also solid after posting three hits, one run, three walks and two strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.
Game two was a pitchers dual through majority of the contest as both teams were scoreless until the fifth inning.
The Wildcats took the lead in the top of the fifth after an error allowed Erin Werhan to reach home plate and Davis hit a two-RBI single to go up 3-0. In the sixth, the Wildcats added another run on a single to cushion its lead.
Bridgewater managed only two hits in the last two innings as Randolph secured game two and diminished the Eagles chances of qualifying for the conference tournament.
The Eagles return home to Fulk Field on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader against Southern Virginia with first pitch at 3:00 p.m.
