LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Bridgewater College Eagles dropped a pair of conference games to Lynchburg College, falling 10-0 (five innings) in game two and 9-1 (five innings) during the second meeting at Moon field.
Game one: Lynchburg 10, Bridgewater 0 (five innings)
Lynchburg pitchers Conner English and Brittani Piazza combined to shutout the Eagles on three hits and Nicole Riley drove in four runs to close game one in five innings.
Bridgewater was overwhelmed by Lynchburg in the first inning as the Hornets scored eight runs on five hits and an error to grab a big lead. The Hornets offense produced its runs on four singles and a three-RBI triple.
Emily Parks singled to right field with two outs in the top of the second, but Mariah Wharton stuck out swinging to leave Parks stranded on first.
Hannah Trala entered the game at pitcher and Brianna Cox moved to left field for the Eagles in the bottom of the second. Trala retired her first batter on a caught foul ball in right field, and Mikalia Guard got the next two unassisted outs at first base.
The Eagles went down in order in top of the third, and the Hornets padded their lead with two more runs in the bottom of the third. Skylar Dickens, of Lynchburg, executed a bunt single to get on base and advanced to third on a throwing error. Dickens crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly and Danielle Powell hit an RBI single for the second run.
With one out, Cox singled to center field in the fourth, but Brooke Throckmorton lined into a double play to end the top half of the inning. During the bottom of the fourth, Trala and the Eagles' defense held the Hornets to one hit and left one on base.
The Eagles had one more opportunity to cut into the Hornets lead in the top of the fifth. Parks drew a walk with one out and Wharton singled to left field on the next at bat. However, a sacrifice bunt from Ryan Kirtner recorded the second out, and Victoria Gontarz flied out to left field to close out the contest.
Game two: Lynchburg 9, Bridgewater 1 (five innings)
The Hornets jumped out to another early lead against the Eagles during the second game of the double feature.
The Hornets took the scoring advantage in the second inning with five runs on six hits. Dickens hit an RBI double, Nicole Riley belted a two-RBI single, Powell drove in a run with a double to center field and Mackenzie Chitwood brought home Powell on a double to right center.
The Eagles put a run on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Cox led off with a single to right center, and Throckmorton also singled on the next bat. A grounder advanced both Cox and Throckmorton, and Cox scored on a wild pitch.
However, the Hornets took advantage of three errors by the Eagles to add four more runs in the fifth and end the game in five innings.
The Eagles will celebrate senior day tomorrow during an ODAC doubleheader against Randolph. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
