BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College softball team earned a crucial split with conference rival Roanoke at Fulk Field on Tuesday afternoon to remain in the playoff hunt.
Bridgewater (7-23, 2-10 ODAC) sparked a five-run rally to outlast Roanoke (16-18, 7-7 ODAC), 5-3, in game one and fell to the Maroons 10-1 in five innings during game two.
By splitting the twin bill, the Eagles remain only one game behind Randolph for the eighth seed in the ODAC Tournament.
Game one: Bridgewater 5, Roanoke 3
Starter Brianna Cox fanned three batters and held the Maroons to one run on one hit in four innings, while sophomore Hannah Trala (W, 2-2) allowed only two runs on seven hits through three innings of relief to receive credit for the win.
The game went scoreless until the top of the third as Taylor Carter, of Roanoke, scored on a wild pitch to put a run on the scoreboard.
The Eagles responded in a big way with a five-run inning in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Brooke Throckmorton led off the inning with a double. Freshman Mikalia Guard then reached on an error, which also advanced Throckmorton to third.
On the next at bat, junior Audra Koogler bunted to score Throckmorton and another Roanoke error loaded the bases. The Maroons switched to pitcher Taylor Asimakopoulos, but it didn't help as sophomore Ryan Kirtner plated Guard on a sacrifice fly, and freshman Lindsey Talley hit an RBI single to left center.
Before the final out, sophomore Hannah Nyquist knocked a two-RBI single to right center to put the Eagles ahead 5-1.
The Maroons threatened to score in the sixth with one out and runners on the corners. However, Jordan Meador hit into a double play as Throckmorton caught the fly ball in right field, threw to Trala and Trala tossed the ball to catcher Emily Parks for the tag at home plate.
Nonetheless, the Maroons would not go down quietly after hitting back-to-back RBI singles with two outs. But the Eagles got the final out on a fly ball to left field for the win.
Freshman Victoria Gontarz and Throckmorton both had two hits, and Nyquist recorded two RBI.
Game two: Roanoke 10, Bridgewater 1 (five innings)
Emily Salsberry and Courtney Oliver combined to limit the Eagles to only one run on three hits, and the Maroons' offense produced a six-run inning in the fifth to pull away in game two.
The Eagles were down early as the Maroons scored three runs on two singles and a grounder in the first and added another run on an RBI single in the second for a 4-0 advantage.
The Eagles put a run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third after Parks tripled to right field and reached home plate on single from Gontarz.
However, the Maroons big inning of six runs on five hits and three errors put the game out of reach.
Parks was the only Eagle with multiple hits in the contest following a 2-for-2 effort at the dish.
The Eagles hit the road for a doubleheader against No. 8 Christopher Newport on Thursday with first pitch at 2:00 p.m.
