Washington and Lee tops Eagles, 9-3

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Washington and Lee snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the top of the sixth inning and went on to defeat Bridgewater College 9-3 in a key ODAC midweek matchup.

With Wednesday's result, the Eagles are 16-10 overall and 7-4 in the ODAC. W&L improves to 20-9, 8-4 in conference play.

The Generals struck first with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Ryan Weston and Scott Simmons opened the frame with back-to-back singles to center and Chadwick Feeley walked to load the bases with no outs. Jonny Swenson followed with a two-run single to right, giving W&L a 2-0 lead.

Bridgweater answered with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth to even the score. With one out, Chris King and Brendan Howell lined consecutive singles up the middle. Brandon Poole then bunted for a base hit to load the bases. King scored from third on an infield error and Howell crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Hensley to tie the score at 2-2.

Four base hits and one Eagles error led to three Washington and Lee runs in the sixth. Simmons and Feeley led off the inning with hits, but Feeley was erased on Swenson's grounder to second for the first out of the inning. With runners at the corners, Simmons scored on a ground ball by Austin Crane and Crane was safe at first when the ball was misplayed for an error. With runners at first and second, Paton executed a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Wasson then added a clutch two-out single to left, scoring both runners for a 5-2 W&L lead.

The Generals added some insurance by tacking on three more runs in the eighth. Crane led off the inning and reached on an error and Paton followed with a single. Both scored on a triple by Wasson, making the score 7-2. Wasson trotted home on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Ruedislli for an 8-2 W&L advantage.

Bridgewater added one run in the bottom of the eighth on a run-scoring single by Howell, but the Generals got that run back in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Paton, making the final score 9-3.

The Generals finished the contest with 15 hits. Wasson led W&L with four RBIs and Simmons finished with three base hits.

Kyle Tipping worked seven solid innings on the mound to log the victory for the Generals. Tipping allowed two runs, both unearned, on four hits. He did not strike out a batter while walking three.

Howell and King each had two hits for the Eagles.

Bridgewater is back in action Thursday afternoon when the Eagles host Averett University in a non-conference contest. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
