Box Score 2 ASHLAND, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team lost a pair of conference games to reigning ODAC champion Randolph-Macon at the R-MC Softball Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Game one: Randolph-Macon 4, Bridgewater 0
Randolph-Macon (18-6, 3-1 ODAC), who was picked first in the preseason poll, sparked a three-run inning in the bottom of the fifth to secure game one of a conference doubleheader against Bridgewater (4-16, 1-3 ODAC).
The Yellow Jackets drove in a run on a double to right field for a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
However, both starting pitchers tossed solid innings to keep runs off the scoreboard until the fifth inning.
The Yellow Jackets padded their lead in the fifth on a wild pitch, single and grounder.
Through six innings of work, senior Brianna Cox recorded two strikeouts, five hits and three earned runs.
Game two: Randolph-Macon 5, Bridgewater 1
The Eagles were down early in game two as Madison Gilman hit a two-run homer in the first inning. The Yellow Jackets added to its lead in the second by producing runs on a single and back-to-back doubles for a 5-0 advantage.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Lindsey Talley singled to third base and then stole second base. On the next at bat, Cox smashed a double to centerfield to bring Talley home.
Starting pitcher Carolyn Campbell kept the Randolph-Macon lineup in check for the remainder of the contest, and the Eagles had an opportunity to cut the Yellow Jackets lead in the sixth inning. Jessica Dawson led off with a single and Campbell also knocked a single after one out.
A bunted single by Talley on the next at bat loaded the bases, but Cox grounded into a double play as the Yellow Jackets escaped the jam.
Both teams went down in order during the last two innings to end the game.
Campbell finished the matchup with eight hits, five earned runs, three walks and two strikeouts in the circle. Talley went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday, April 2 with a doubleheader at home against Sweet Briar at 1:00 p.m.
