Eagles Split Twin Bill during ODAC Opener against Shenandoah

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team split the twin bill during its ODAC opener against Shenandoah at Henkel-Harris Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Eagles edged the Hornets 7-6 in game one and fell 11-3 (five innings) during game two.

Game 1: Bridgewater 7, Shenandoah 6

Bridgewater (4-12, 1-1 ODAC) was led by its seniors in a back-and-forth affair as Brooke Throckmorton recorded three hits and Brianna Cox drove in three runs to help Bridgewater claim game one.

BC opened the contest with a one-run inning in the top of the first for the early advantage.

Freshman Victoria Gontarz led off the first inning with a double to left center and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Lindsey Talley. Freshman McKenzie Herring drew a walk and swiped second base to put two runners in scoring position. A sacrifice fly to right field by Cox drove in Gontarz before a popup to shortstop closed the inning.

The Eagles held the Hornets (7-9, 1-1 ODAC) scoreless until third inning. With runners on second and third base, the Hornets scored its two runs on a wild pitch and ground out to shortstop.

However, the Eagles offense knocked four hits to score three runs and regain the lead in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Hannah Nyquist led off the inning with a single to third base, stole second base for scoring position and reached home plate on a fielding error. With runners on first and second base, Cox smacked a two-RBI single up the middle to give the Eagles a 4-2 margin.

Bridgewater almost padded its lead in the sixth inning. After loading the bases with only one out, Nyquist was tagged by the catcher at home plate and Cox popped up to second to leave three left on base.

In the bottom sixth, the Hornets regained the scoring advantage with a five-run explosion. With two outs, Shenandoah plated runners on a double down the left line, a two-RBI single up the middle and a RBI triple to right center for a 6-4 lead heading into the final inning.

The Eagles answered with three runs in the seventh inning for the game's fourth lead change. A single by Throckmorton, hit by pitch from Mikalia Guard and Hornet's error loaded the bases with only one out. Junior Audra Koogler brought home Throckmorton on a grounder and on the next at bat Gontarz blasted a double to right field to score Nyquist and Guard.

The Eagles then sealed the win by holding the Hornets to one hit in the bottom seventh.

Cox (W, 2-4) pitched a complete game for Bridgewater, finishing the day with 11 hits and six runs (two earned). Gontarz also posted two hits, two RBI and two runs.

Game 2: Shenandoah 11, Bridgewater 3 (five innings)

The Hornets jumped out to an 8-0 lead behind eight hits during the first inning. Shenandoah scored on two doubles, a two-run error, and three singles.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard in the top of the third after Cox singled up the middle to bat in Talley.

Nonetheless, the Hornets produced five hits to drive in three more runs and cushion their lead, 11-1.

During the top of the fifth, Cox plated Talley again on a double to left field, and Throckmorton brought Cox home on a single down the left line before the game was called.

The Eagles are back in action on Friday with a non-conference doubleheader against No. 2 Emory in Lynchburg, Va., starting at 11:00 a.m.
