BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team fell 5-0 and 5-3 during its home opener against Mary Washington on Monday afternoon at Fulk Field.
Game 1: Mary Washington 5, Bridgewater 0
Mary Washington (5-9) claimed game one against the Eagles behind a five-run rally in the top of the second. With a 1-0 led, Olivia Tatara belted a RBI double to center field and Stefannie Asselanis followed up with a two-RBI single on the next at bat.
Hannah Hautz capped the rally with another RBI double to center field before Bridgewater (3-9) would get the two outs needed to close inning.
The Eagles had an opportunity to close the gap in the third inning. With two outs, BC hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second base, but Lindsey Talley grounded out to second for the third out.
Game 2: Mary Washington 5, Bridgewater 3
The Eagles got off to a quick start in the second game with a three-run first inning. McKenzie Herring led off with a single to the pitcher, advanced to second on a throwing error, made it to third following a groundout and plated on a Mary Washington error.
Another Mary Washington error allowed the Eagles to score their second run and Audra Koogler hit an RBI single up the middle for the 3-0 lead.
Nonetheless, Mary Washington answered in the top of the second with one run on three hits. Zoe Patrick singled to left field to bring home Hannah Hautz and cut the deficit, 3-1.
Bridgewater was able to protect its lead until the top of the seventh. A single by Hautz and a costly error from the Eagles allowed Mary Washington to score three runs. Mary Washington then tacked on one more run with a RBI single up the middle for the 5-3 margin.
Bridgewater continued to battle in the bottom of the seventh. Wharton led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Throckmorton also drew a walk, but was put out on the next at bat as Koogler reached first on a fielder choice. With runners on third and first, Lacey Shifflet lined out to shortstop to end the contest.
Hannah Trala pitched a complete game for the Eagles and struck out four while allowing 13 hits for five runs (four earned). Koogler and Herring both finished the game with two hits.
The Eagles are back in action tomorrow with a doubleheader on the road against Mary Baldwin at 3:00 p.m.
