Mary Washington Slips Past Eagles, 3-2

FREDERICKSUBRG, Va. - The University of Mary Washington pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday afternoon to defeat the Bridgewater College Eagles 3-2 in non-conference baseball action.

Bridgewater ace Ryan Leake and Mary Washington ace Ryan Van Assche hooked up in a pitcher's duel with both posting zeroes on the scoreboard through five innings.

Mary Washington finally got to Leake in the bottom of the sixth. Mitch Moynihan and David Slupek led off with singles before James Sink struck out. Stephen Johnston walked to load the bases, ending the day for Leake on the mound. Ryan Mason entered for the Eagles and Jose Moreno grounded out to second, scoring Moynihan for a 1-0 Mary Washington lead. Brian Burns then singled to left, chasing Slupek home to make it 2-0.

Bridgewater fought back and tied the score with single runs in the seventh and eighth inning.

Leake led off the seventh and was safe on an infield error. Van Assche retired the next two hitters before Cavin Clyde reached an another error. Justin Petock singled to right, scoring Leake to trim the deficit to 2-1.

With one out in the eighth, Dylan Horne reached on an infield single and moved to third when Brandon Poole was safe on an error. Horne scored on Leake's sacrifice fly, tying the score at 2-2.

The Eagles had a chance to take the lead in the top half of the ninth. Brendan Howell led off with a single on took second on Cavin Clyde's sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Chris King singled to right, but Howell was thrown out trying to score from second on the play.

Mary Washington put the game away in the ninth against Eagles' reliever Steven Woerner. Burns led off the inning with a walk and stole second. Thomas Weaver followed with a single to rightcenter, scoring Burns with the winning run.

Van Assche went the distance on the mound to pick up the victory. He allowed two runs, both unearned, on six hits. He struck out 11 and did not walk a batter.

Leake worked 5.1 innings and was charged with both runs while allowing four hits. He struck out four and walked five. Mason went 1.2 innings and gave up two hits, He struck out one batter. Woerner took the loss after allowing one run on one hit in one inning plus on the mound.

Petock was the only Bridgewater player with multiple hits as he finished 2-for-4 with one run batted in.

Bridgewater has a heavy home schedule on tap this weekend with a doubleheader vs. Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday and a single game Sunday with Stevenson University
