BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College volleyball team recorded its fifth consecutive three-set victory following a 3-0 (16-25, 19-25, 11-25) sweep against conference rival Randolph on Wednesday in Nininger Hall.
Bridgewater (15-3, 5-1 ODAC) also increased its winning streak to seven in a row with three of those wins against ODAC competition.
Last time Bridgewater and Randolph (2-15, 0-5 ODAC) met, the Wildcats rallied from a 1-0 deficit to hand the Eagles a 3-1 defeat. The lost prevented BC from a 2015 playoff appearance, because both teams finished ODAC play 4-7 and RC was the beneficiary of the head-to-head tiebreaker.
Nonetheless, the Eagles avenged last year's defeat to remain third in the conference standings.
Senior Abby Mills paced BC with her seventh double-double of the season behind 11 kills (.367) and 11 digs. Junior Carleigh Studtmann contributed 10 kills (.412), five block assists and two solo stops.
Freshman Rachael Girard collected a team-high 17 assists and sophomore Jenna Hamra also notched double-digit assists with 15. Junior Macon Frey led the Eagles in digs with 16 and added four service aces, while senior Bailey Long chipped in seven kills on a .312 attack percentage.
In the first set, a kill from Long and a service ace by Frey lifted BC to a 15-11 advantage. The Eagles then sparked a 5-1 run on the strength of three kills by Studtmann to pull away, 21-14.
The Eagles closed the first set by scoring three unanswered points. The team notched a game-high 14 kills on a .237 hitting percentage during the period.
Bridgewater grabbed a 16-12 lead in the second set after Girard found sophomore Victoria Wilson for the kill.
Mills penetrated the Wildcats' defense to create a 23-18 affair. Studtmann then dialed up a service ace on the next possession, and a couple of plays later Mills sealed game two with another kill.
During the third set, the Eagles' defense limited the Wildcats to six kills on seven attack errors and a -.029 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Deja Booker blasted a spike to put BC ahead 10-3 and force a RC timeout. A Bridgewater service error closed the gap to 15-10, but the Eagles cranked a 10-1 blitz for the match victory.
The Eagles will hit the road on Saturday to compete against Penn St.-Harrisburg (3:00 p.m.) and St. Mary's (5:00 p.m.) in a tri-match hosted by the Seahawks of SMC.
