Hornets Pull Away in Third Quarter

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. –
A big third quarter run helped the Shenandoah Hornets pull away, as the Bridgewater College football team lost its Hall of Fame game 34-10 under the lights at Jopson Field.

The Hornets broke the game open with 14 points in 24 seconds early in the third quarter. After SU took the first drive of the second half down the field for seven points, Jake Shaffer forced a fumble on the next play that was recovered by Michael Wroble.

Shenandoah made it two touchdowns on two offensive snaps, with Michael Ashwell catching a 25-yard Hayden Bauserman pass for a 24-3 scoreline.

The visitors made it 21 unanswered third quarter points on a 21-yard pick-six by Steve Gebhardt.

Muhammad Kahn thwarted a drive in the third with a four-yard tackle for loss and later recovered a fumble that was forced by Davey Hardesty. That led to Alex Galloway's 25-yard touchdown catch after the BC sophomore broke a tackle.

Malivai Barker rushed for 137 yards for Bridgewater, while Shenandoah back Cedrick Delaney totaled 174 yards for the visitors.

Freshman Kyle Edwards got his first collegiate start under center and the Eagles drove right down the field on the game's first drive. Barker touched the ball on the game's first four plays, carrying in 28 yards on the opening play and then taking a 20-yard screen pass on the ensuing snap.

Bridgewater went for it on 4th-and-goal from the 1-yard line, and Barker fumbled with the Hornets' line getting great penetration on the play.

Shenandoah also went for it on fourth during their opening drive, with punter Christian Arias faking a kick for the first down. Early in the second quarter, Arias pinned the Eagles inside their own 10 with a 58-yard boot (Arias averaged 53.0 yards on four punts).

Edwards and the Eagles took back field position with a nice drive however, with Barker taking it 20 yards across midfield on third down, and the rookie QB hitting Galloway for 21 yards on a 3rd-and-15. The threat ended when Edwards was picked off by Malik Sims in the end zone.

Delaney carried it 53 yards into BC territory, and the Hornets took a 10-0 lead on an outstanding fourth down fade route catch by Qyly Middleljn. Shenandoah had gone ahead 3-0 on a 40-yard field goal at the end of the first quarter.

The Eagles did get on the board with 17 seconds left in the first half, on a 36-yard Anthony Rossi field goal to send BC into the locker room trailing 10-3.

Bridgewater falls to 2-4, 1-2 ODAC and will be home again next weekend vs. Emory & Henry. Shenandoah improves to 4-2, 2-1.
