Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Bridgewater College volleyball team continued to struggle in the last day of Captain's Classic hosted by Christopher Newport as the program dropped back-to-back games to start the 2015 season 0-4.
The Eagles competed in a doubleheader against Meredith and No. 6 nationally ranked Christopher Newport Saturday afternoon in the Freeman Center in Newport News, Va.
The team fell to Meredith 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-21) in its first match of the twin bill.
During the first game, the Eagles continued to rely on their young players for productivity. Freshman outside hitter Danielle McKelvey scored double digit points on 10 kills and an assisted block and sophomore middle hitter Carleigh Studtmann registered six kills and a service ace.
The Eagles found themselves in a deep hole early in the first set after a kill from the Avenging Angel's Emily Hendricks created a 14-7 affair.
The Angels committed a service error to bring the Eagles within six at 18-12, but the Angels offense produced six of its last seven points to take the match lead.
In the second set, the Eagles defense improved to hold the Angels to its worst hitting percentage of the match at .243. The Eagles remained within three points of the set lead until the Angels went on a 9-3 run for an 18-12 advantage.
The young Eagles continued to push the Angels in the third frame. McKelvey blasted a kill to give the team a 12-11 lead.
However, a series of errors from the Eagles granted the Angels a 20-12 margin and eventually the match.
In the Eagles final contest of the day, the team lost to No. 6 Christopher Newport 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-12).
McKelvey, Studtmann and freshman Deja Booker lead the Eagles offense with four points each, sophomore Macon Frey posted 12 digs and freshman Victoria Wilson registered 13 assists.
Wilson assisted sophomore Sarah Temple on a kill shot for a 6-5 lead to the start the match. However, the Captain's Briana Sutton hammered three straight points for a commanding 17-11 advantage.
The Eagles cut the deficit to 20-17 following a service error, but the Captains wouldn't relinquish another point in the first frame.
During the second set, the Eagles committed seven errors while the Captains had six to keep contest close, and the Eagles remained within four points through the majority of the period.
A kill from McKelvey brought the team within three at 21-18 before the Captains strung together another run for their second straight set point.
By the third set, the Eagles ran out of gas. The Captains stormed out to a 12-5 lead and never looked back.
The young Eagles squad will have a small break to work on their weaknesses as they won't return to the court until the Guetle Invitational hosted by Catholic in Washington D.C from Sept. 11-12.
The team is slated to face Wesley (4 p.m.) and Marywood (6 p.m.) on Sept. 11 and Catholic (11 a.m.) and Marymount (1 p.m.) on Sept. 12.
