BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Bridgewater College softball team won both games of their nonconference doubleheader in five innings as the Eagles faced off against the Southern Virginia University Knights

Despite having one out in the top of the inning, the Eagles were quick to take advantage of two Southern Virginia errors to get on base before Brooke Throckmorton doubled to bring in two runs for an early lead.

Ryan Kirtner then hit a sacrifice fly to allow Throckmorton to score, bringing the lead to 3-0 as the Eagles went into the bottom of the inning.

Southern Virginia managed to get on the scoreboard with a run of their own to decrease the gap by two but Bridgewater would quickly collect the three outs needed to end the inning.

The Eagles extended their lead to 7-1 in the top of the second Throckmorton, Jen Balcom, and Hannah Nyquist and Audra Koogler each hit an RBI single while Brianna Cox hit an RBI double.

Bridgewater never relinquished their lead as Balcom, Cox, and Throckmorton each scored to push the Eagles 10-1 in the top of the third.

Although Southern Virginia earned one more run in the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles would ultimately seal the 10-2 win.

Throckmorton went 2-for-3 at bat with two runs and two RBIs while Cox was 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs. Balcom and Nyquist were both 1-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.

Amanda Lutz took the win in the circle, giving up three hits while striking out six batters and walking one.

For Southern Virginia, Jamie Pinkston was 1-for-2 with two runs while Lainie Thompson tallied the only RBI. Pinkston also pitched the loss, giving up 12 hits on nine runs while striking out and walking three batters.

In game two, the Eagles were once again first on the scoreboard as Rayann Foltz singled to bring home Lacey Shifflet for a 1-0 lead.

The score remained until the top of the fourth when Bridgewater added six runs as Shifflet hit an RBI single before Balcom batted in two more runners to jump to a 4-0 lead. Nyquist and Cox scored the final two runs of the inning to push the Eagles ahead, 6-0.

Southern Virginia collected its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a passed ball but the Eagles would not let them catch up as Mariah Wharton hit her first collegiate homerun in the top of the fifth for a 7-0 score.

Southern Virginia tallied two outs but couldn't grab the third as Balcom, Nyquist, and Cox scored for a 10-1 lead. The Knights grabbed one more run in the bottom of the fifth as Reilly Anderson scored on a single by Katierose Helems but the game would close in five innings as the Eagles collected the second win of the day, 10-2.

Balcom and Nyquist were both 1-for-3 with two runs while Cox went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Wharton was 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. Nyquist had added one RBI while Balcom added two RBIs for the Eagles.

Cox took the win in the circle, giving up one hit while striking out six batters.

Pinkston went 2-for-3 for the Knights and took the loss in the circle where she gave up seven hits and walked three batters. Helems was 1-for-3 and tallied the only RBI.

The Eagles close out their regular season tomorrow when they travel to ODAC rival Roanoke College for a nightcap doubleheader. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
