Box Score 2 LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Bridgewater College softball team fell to conference rival Randolph College 2-1 in the opening game before dropping the second game, 11-3, in five innings.
The WildCats were first on the board as Haley Brickles reached home on a single by Haleigh Wilson but the Eagles managed to tie up the score in the top of the fifth as Jen Balcom singled before reaching third on a fielding error to bring home Audra Koogler.
Randolph added their second run in the bottom of the inning and held on tight to seal the first game win.
Brianna Cox was 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk while Brooke Throckmorton and Jessica Dawson were 1-for-3.
Cox took the loss in the circle, giving up five hits on two runs while striking out three batters.
For Randolph, Jessica Nowak went 2-for-2 with one run. Brittany Campbell went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Hannah Winfree earned the win, pitching 2.1 innings and giving up only two hits.
Randolph earned two runs in the start of the second game for an early lead before coming back in the bottom of the third to score three more runs and push ahead 5-0.
However the Eagles were able to cut the deficit to 5-3 in the top of the fourth as Cox and Amber Wood were batted in by a homer from Brooke Throckmorton.
With no outs, Bridgewater attempted to decrease the gap further. Jessica Dawson singled to left field before advancing to second on a single by Mariah Wharton. Ryan Kirtner then hit a sacrifice bunt to advance both teammates into scoring positions.
Koogler managed to reach on a fielder's choice but Dawson was tagged out at home. Rayann Foltz was hit by a pitch to load the bases but Jen Balcom fouled out to third base to end Eagles' scoring opportunities.
Randolph jumped to a large lead and didn't look back as the WildCats grabbed two runs with only one out before Ashley Dudding scored on a passed ball to push the lead to 8-3. Randolph grabbed three more runs as Rachel Hickman homered and ended the game in the fifth inning.
Throckmorton went 2-for-3 with three RBIs while Cox was 2-for-3.
Hunter Glave went 3-for-3 while Dudding went 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Winfree earned the win in the circle, giving up five hits and three runs. Lauren Morris tallied her second save as she pitched the final inning.
The Eagles are back home on Wednesday when they play a nonconference doubleheader against McDaniel College. First game is set at 3 p.m.
