Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater College softball team faltered in its doubleheader against conference rival Lynchburg College in their quest for post season contention.
Despite a scoreless first inning, Amber Ingram and Lauren Smith pushed Lynchburg to a 2-0 advantage as both scored on wild pitches. Leslie Bourgeois batted in a third run for the Hornets as she tripled to right field before scoring on a single by Nicole Riley. Jessi Hall added the final run to push the Hornets to 5-0.
Although the Eagles were able to shut out the Hornets for the next couple of innings, Lynchburg broke through to score four runs in the top of the fourth before closing out the game with three more in the top of the fifth for the final 12-0 tally.
Brianna Cox and Rayann Foltz went 1-for-2. Cox took the loss in the circle, allowing 12 runs on 9 hits and walked one batter
For the Hornets, Lauren Smith was 3-for-3 with one hit and one RBI while Leslie Bourgeois went 2-for-2 with three runs and one RBI. Danielle Powell was 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs.
Hope Johnson took the win, giving up only two hits. Elizabeth Fioretti pitched in relief and walked only two batters.
In the start of the second game, Bridgewater was quick to collect three outs to send the Hornets to the dugout but in the top of the second, Ingram homered to put Lynchburg on the board. The Hornets added three more runs for an early 4-0 lead.
Although Lynchburg collected two runs in the top of the fifth, Bridgewater nearly found its opportunity in the bottom of the inning when Brooke Throckmorton singled to left field and advanced to second for a scoring position on an Audra Koolger single.
Mariah Wharton hit a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners but the inning would close as the Eagles struck out swinging.
Despite Lynchburg loading the bases in the top of the sixth, the Eagles were able to save two runs by catching Bourgeois and Nicole Riley at home for two outs. The Eagles attempted to grab the final out of the inning but a play gone awry saw three runners reach home for a commanding 10-0 lead.
Bridgewater tried to find an opportunity to land on the scoreboard but Lynchburg sealed the win as the Eagles went down in order.
Koogler and Throckmorton were 1-for-2 while Dawson and Balcom were 1-for-3. Hannah Trala took the loss in the circle allowing six runs on nine hits and striking out one batter.
Hall went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Kayla St. John and Lauren Smith both went 2-for-3 with one run, with Smith adding an RBI. Amy Bresson tallied three RBIs. Kirsten Copely pitched the win in the circle, only giving up one hit and striking out two while Katie Maddox pitched in relief and gave up three hits.
The Eagles play again tomorrow when they travel to Randolph College for another ODAC doubleheader. First game is set for 2 p.m.
