Softball Swings to Double Conference Win Over Sweet Briar

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SWEET BRIAR, Va. - Continuing their comeback, the Bridgewater College softball team kept their winning streak alive as the Eagles soared to their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Sweet Briar College.

The Eagles won 17-2 in the opening game, notching runs in all five innings. Bridgewater immediately knocked in four runs in the top of the first inning as Brianna Cox doubled to bat in Balcom before Mariah Wharton reached first on an error to bring home Cox.

Amanda Lutz came home on another Sweet Briar error while Wharton scored the last run of the inning for an early 4-0 lead.

Bridgewater continued its streak in the following inning as Balcom tripled to earn an RBI for Karie Burgess. The sophomore then scored a run of her own as Rayann Foltz reached first on a fielder's choice.

Foltz and Wharton wrapped up the inning as the pair reached home. Brooke Throckmorton notched the only run for the Eagles in the third inning before returning in the top of the fourth to hit a double for her first RBI of the day.

Burgess, Balcom and Foltz also collected doubles at their turn at the plate to bring home runners with Burgess notching two RBIs. Foltz scored the final run to push the Eagles to a large 15-0 lead.

Sweet Briar earned their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth but the Eagles took the win in the fifth inning as Throckmorton and Balcom each tallied a home run for the final 17-2 score.

Balcom went 3-for-5 with four runs, four RBIs and notched her first collegiate home run. Throckmorton was 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Wharton and Burgess added two runs and two RBIs for the Eagles.

Lutz pitched three innings in the circle and earned the win, giving up one hit while striking out six batters. Hannah Trala pitched two innings and gave up three hits.

Kayla Dooms went 2-for-2 for the Vixens while Nene Jones went 1-for-3. Taylor Fischer and Cynthia Schuh had the only RBIs for the Vixens.

Bridgewater began the second game with a bang as the Eagles put up six runs in the first inning with Balcom and Foltz leading off with the first two runs. Cox then scored as Audra Koogler collected the first out of the inning.

Lutz then stole home before Jessica Dawson singled to bring home Wharton. Dawson scored the last run of the inning, taking advantage of Burgess' double.

The Vixens only managed one run in the bottom as Hollie Halford ran home as Dooms reached first base on an error. However, the Eagles pushed their lead to 8-1 as Foltz and Lutz each scored a run in the second inning.

Sweet Briar cut the deficit to 8-3 in the third but Cox scored again as Dawson was walked with bases loaded in the top of the fourth.

The Eagles clinched the win, 12-3, in the sixth inning with Wharton reaching home on a single from Shifflet before Shifflet was brought home by Throckmorton, who notched her second home run of the day.

Cox went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI while Lutz was 1-for-2 with two runs and one RBI. Dawson chipped in two runs and two RBIs for the day with Foltz adding two runs of her own.

Amber Wood took the win in the circle as the freshman pitcher allowed three runs on two hits while striking out two batters and walking one. Anna Patterson pitched in relief, giving up one hit and striking out three batters.

Halford went 1-for-2 for the Vixens and tallied two runs and one RBI. Amanda Terry went 1-for-2 with one run while Kayla Dooms notched one RBI. Cynthia Schuh took the loss, allowing 12 runs on 13 hits while striking out one batter.
