Eagles Win Pair Over Mary Baldwin

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Despite scattered showers and dark clouds, the Bridgewater College softball team collected a pair of wins as the Eagles swept Mary Baldwin College Thursday afternoon.

After two innings with no runs in the opening game, Bridgewater ended up scoring four runs in the bottom of the third.

Jen Balcom batted in Brooke Throckmorton before Samantha Bird bunted to advance home Karie Burgess. Balcom then stole home to bring the Eagles to a 3-0 lead.

Bird notched the final run of the inning on a single by Mariah Wharton to push Bridgewater to a 4-0 lead heading into the fourth inning.

The Eagles continued to shut out the Fighting Squirrels and collected two more runs in the bottom of the fifth with Bird and Lacey Shifflet reaching home.

Bridgewater tallied one more run in the bottom of the sixth with Rayann Foltz scoring on a single from Shifflet to bring the final tally to 7-0.

Bird went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run and one RBI while Wharton was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Throckmorton was 2-for-3 at bat with Shifflet and Balcom notching one RBI apiece.

Hannah Trala took the win inside the circle for the Eagles, allowing no runs on on four hits and struck out four batters without walking any.

Morgan Tully was 1-for-2 for Mary Baldwin while Kristen Anderson and Kate Dickinson both went 1-for-3. Dickinson pitched five innings and allowed five runs on nine hits while striking out one batter.

The Eagles were the first to land on the board in the second game when Wharton went home on a double steal in the second inning and Bridgewater maintained control of the lead as the team ended up scoring six runs in the bottom of the third.

Lutz reached first on an error to bring home Balcom before Foltz collected the next run as Wharton walked with bases loaded.

The Eagles tallied two outs with the next couple of batters but Throckmorton kept the team in the inning as she doubled to center field and brought home three batters for a large 6-0 lead.

Throckmorton notched the final run of the inning for the final 7-0 score and the Eagles shut out Mary Baldwin for their second win of the day.

Throckmorton led the Eagles as she went 2-for-3 with one run and three RBIs. Lutz and Wharton tallied one RBI apiece.

Anna Patterson earned her first collegiate win in the circle. The freshman pitched seven innings and allowed no runs on five hits while striking out two and walking two.

Lindsey Shifflet led Mary Baldwin and went 2-for-3. Jonquil Brown, Tully, and Kayla Wheeler were 1-for-3. Olivia Compton took the loss in the circle, allowing seven runs (just two earned) on five hits while striking out four and walking six.

The Eagles are back on Saturday when they look for their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win against Sweet Briar College. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
