BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater Eagles softball team dropped two losses in their home opener as they went head-to-head in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match up against Shenandoah University.
The first game began slowly with neither team scoring in the first two innings, but the Hornets managed to land on the scoreboard first as a groundout to shortstop allowed Haley Koeninger to reach home.
The Eagles attempted a comeback in the bottom of the third as Rayann Foltz advanced all the way to third base but Bridgewater collected its last out before Foltz could reach the plate.
Despite a lull in play for several innings, the Hornets pushed their lead to 2-0 by taking advantage of a high throw to score in the top of the seventh.
Bridgewater was unable to respond in its final turn at bat, giving Shenandoah the 2-0 victory.
Foltz was 1-for-2 at the plate while both Amanda Lutz and Samantha Bird went 1-for-3. Lutz took the loss in the circle for the Eagles with two runs on five hits while striking out three batters and walking none.
Kimberly Brady was 2-for-3 at bat for the Hornets while Megan Vanderburgh, Ashlyn Drake and Haley Koeninger were 1-for-3. Drake and Nicole Pierson each collected an RBI for the game.
As the second game began, Shenandoah was once again the first to score and pushed to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second.
The Hornets were able to maintain their lead as a home run by Madison Bradley and a run by Corbin sent Shenandoah into the fourth inning up 4-0.
However, the Eagles began to make a comeback as Ryan Kirtner hit Bridgewater's first home run of the season to bring home Lacey Shifflett and cut the deficit to 4-2. The Eagles eventually caught up to the Hornets and tied it up 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth.
Neither team could find a run through the seventh and had to go into an eighth inning where the Hornets got a home run by Corbin to lift them to a 6-4 lead with only one out. Shenandoah collected one more run and then shut out the Eagles in the bottom half to claim the win, 7-4.
Brianna Cox was 2-for-4 at the plate and collected one RBI on the day. She also pitched seven innings in the circle where she struck out four batters and walked two. Kirtner added two RBIs for the game while Hannah Nyquist tallied one.
Corbin was 3-for-4 at bat for the Hornets and notched two RBIs while Bradley, Karli Rorabaugh, and Victoria Minor added one RBI apiece.
