BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Senior Caroline Augsburger scored two goals and dished out a pair of assists to lead the Bridgewater Eagles field hockey team to a 5-3 victory over Roanoke College in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener for both squads.
Early in the contest, the Eagles earned a penalty corner and made the most of the situation when junior Rachael Loy's insert found the stick of Augsburger and the Lancaster, Pa. native fired a shot into the net for a 1-0 Bridgewater lead at the 4:34 mark of the first half.
Both teams had opportunities at the offensive end over the next seven minutes before the Eagles added an insurance tally. Bridgewater (4-5, 1-0 ODAC) earned its second corner of the game in the 12th minute and this time Loy fired a pass to Augsburger and the senior's shot caromed off of a defender but Augsburger was there to pick up her own rebound and stuck a shot in the net for a 2-0 Eagles lead. The goal was Augsburger's fourth of the season.
At the 14:37 mark, the Eagles made it 3-for-3 on corners as Augsburger took the insert pass from Loy and found Taylor Prillaman and the junior netted her fourth goal of the year to build a 3-0 Bridgewater lead. After the Bridgewater goal, the Maroons used a timeout and made a goalie switch as Ashleigh Hamman entered for Candice Fisher.
Following the three-goal outburst, the majority of the rest of the first half stayed in the Bridgewater end as the Eagles took a 3-0 advantage to the locker room.
Over the first 35 minutes of play, the Eagles owned a 12-6 advantage in shots and a 9-3 edge in corners.
The roles quickly changed out of the intermission. Caroline Peterson took a pass from Katerina DeSimone and beat Bridgewater keeper Amanda Harper to cut the deficit to 3-1 after four minutes of play in the second stanza.
Bridgewater put the pressure back on the Maroons before a 2-on-1 breakaway led to the fourth goal of the game for the Eagles offense. Augsburger sprinted downfield and found the outstretched stick of Marisa Sims and the sophomore chipped a shot into the top of the cage for her second goal of the season which extended the Bridgewater lead back to three at a 4-1 tally with less than 17 minutes to play.
Junior Alenka Ferrufino added Bridgewater's final goal of the game at the 58:51 mark. Ferrufino swiped the ball from a scrum in front of the net and sliced a shot into the cage for a 5-1 Eagles advantage.
Roanoke (4-3, 0-1 ODAC) added two late goals off of shots from Palmisano and Shelbi Holloman but it wasn't enough as the Eagles turned in a 5-3 victory in the conference opener for both teams.
