MOBILE VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Freshman Haley Harris belted a walk-off, two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to hand the Bridgewater Eagles softball team a 4-2 victory in game number one against 15th-ranked Christopher Newport University. In the nightcap, the Eagles committed five errors in a 10-2 loss to the Captains to settle for a split in non-conference action.

In game number one, the Captains nicked starting pitcher Brianna Cox for single runs in the second and third innings before both pitcher's locked into a pitcher's duel over the middle innings.

Bridgewater got on the scoreboard with a two- run sixth inning to tie the contest up as the game shifted to the final frame. Samantha Fridley opened the inning with a single, forcing a pitching change for the Captains. Cox reached base on a fielder's choice and was replaced on the bases by sophomore Elizabeth Keech after a Brooke Throckmorton single. After a strikeout, Samantha Bird walked to load the bases, giving the Eagles new life at the plate.

Karie Burgess got the Eagles on the board with a bases-loaded walk, scoring Keech to trim the deficit to 2-1. Freshman Jen Balcom responded with fielder's choice and the throw to second base trying to retire Burgess wasn't in time, allowing Throckmorton to score as Bridgewater knotted the game up at two runs each.

In the seventh, both teams had base runners but neither team put a runner in scoring position as the game shifted to extra innings.

Christopher Newport elected to swing away in the eighth and Cox recorded a lead-off strikeout to put one away. Cox followed with back-to-back groundouts to keep the game tied at a 2-2 tally heading to the bottom of the eighth.

Haley Lloyd replaced Throckmorton on the base paths to start the frame, and moved to third quickly on a passed ball. Harris proceeded to draw a full count before blasting a walk-off homer over the left field fence to hand the Eagles a 4-2 win over the nationally-ranked Captains.

Fridley and Cox each tallied 2-for-4 games, while Harris' two-RBI effort led a nine-hit attack for the Eagles.

Cox turned in a complete-game win after allowing two runs on eight hits. The sophomore fanned six batters in the win.

Seven different players tallied a hit each for the Captains while Makayla Jenkins allowed three runs on three hits over the final two innings of play.

In the nightcap, the Captains scored three runs in the first and added a seven-run fifth to post a 10-2 win in five innings.

Christopher Newport tallied two hits and took advantage of two Bridgewater fielding errors to score three runs in the top of the first.

After a scoreless second, Bridgewater got back into the ball game in the third with a pair of runs. Balcom belted a one-out single and Kasey Anderson reached on a fielding error to put runners at first and second. Lauren Jenkins pushed Balcom and Anderson on a groundout up a base before Fridley drove both runners in with a single to the gap in right to cut the CNU lead to 3-2.

Both teams went down without a run in the fourth before a seven-run inning from the Captains in the fifth put the game in the books, handing Christopher Newport a 10-2 win in five innings.

Three players tallied two hits each for the Captains in the nightcap while Hanah Marshall secured the win after allowing two runs, neither of which were earned, on four hits in a complete-game effort.

Anderson, Balcom and Fridley tallied the lone hits for Bridgewater in the nightcap while Amanda Lutz was tagged with the loss after allowing seven runs, only one of which was earned, in 4.1 innings in the circle.

Bridgewater returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Emory & Henry. Start time against the Wasps is set for 2 p.m.
