BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College controlled action Sunday afternoon and swept the Guilford College Quakers, 9-0, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference women's tennis play.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick lead by sweeping the doubles competition.
Katie Gordon and Maria Hawkins took the win at No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-2 over Guilford's Haley Andrews and Allison Hewitt. Brittany Wilson and Jessie Mitchell handled the Quaker duo of Madison Giles and Nora Prokosch, 8-4. Bridgewater's Holly Knupp and Whitney Cash completed the sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles over Mara Stern and Fernanda Gonzalez.
Hawkins was the first off the court in singles as she stopped Hewitt 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 flight. Gordon then clinched the team victory for the Eagles as she defeated Andrews 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1.
The Eagles took the remaining four matches, all in straight sets.
Wilson downed Giles 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 while Mitchell held off Gonzalez at No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-4. Knupp blanked Prokosch 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and Cash defeated Leah Meservey 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 6 singles flight.
Bridgewater is now 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the ODAC.
