BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Senior Brea Hinegardner went deep twice and drove in six runs on the day to lead the Bridgewater Eagles softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Sweet Briar on Sunday afternoon at the BC Softball Field.
The Eagles used a seven-inning first in the opener to run away to a 12-0 victory in five innings before scoring 13 runs in the second inning of game two in a 16-2 victory in five.
Starting pitcher Brianna Cox put the Vixens down in order in the first inning before Bridgewater got all of the runs it would need in the home half of the inning with a seven-run bottom of the first.
Senior Kasey Anderson led off the inning with a walk and swiped second base to put an early runner in scoring position. Following an infield lineout, freshman Samantha Fridley tripled to right center field, scoring Anderson, to put the Eagles up 1-0. After the Fridley triple, Hinegardner belted her first homer of the day when she drilled a 1-1 pitch over fence in left field to extend the lead to 3-0. Sophomore Brooke Throckmorton followed with a single to center and advanced into scoring position on a passed ball. Berkeley Driskill proceeded to reach on an error to put runners on the corners prior to Cox belting a single up the middle which scored Throckmorton for the fourth run of the inning.
After a groundout that should have been the final out of the inning, freshman Jen Balcom reached on an error, scoring Driskill in the process and Anderson singled through the right side, scoring Balcom and Cox, to push Bridgewater out to a 7-0 lead after the first.
Sweet Briar catcher Nene Jones belted a double for the first Vixens hit of the game but Jones was stranded at third base to end the inning to hold the Bridgewater lead at seven runs. Fridley and Hinegardner walked to open the inning and the senior first baseman later scored when Driskill reached on an infield error to put Bridgewater up 8-0. Cox followed with a single and Karie Burgess ended the scoring in the inning with a single up the middle, plating Driskill, to build a 9-0 lead.
Bridgewater added three runs in the third inning to finalize the scoring at a 12-0 tally.
Nine different players tallied a hit for Bridgewater to lead an 11-hit attack for the Eagles in the opener. Cox and Hinegardner each tallied two-hit games to lead the offense.
Cox picked up the win after allowing no runs on just one hit over the first three innings of the game. Lauren Jenkins replaced Cox in the fourth and pitched two no-hit innings to finalize the win.
Jones registered the lone hit in the first game while Megan Thompson allowed 12 runs, six earned, to pick up the loss.
Sweet Briar tallied single runs in the second and third innings but a 13-run second from the Eagles blew the second game wide open.
Anderson led off with a single and swiped second and third before scoring on a wild pitch to build a 1-0 lead. Fridley reached on a fielder's choice and was pushed home on a Hinegardner double to extend the lead to 2-0. Hinegardner later scored on a passed ball to put the Eagles out in front, 3-0.
Hollie Halford doubled off of Bridgewater starter Amanda Lutz to open the second inning and later scored on a wild pitch for the first Sweet Briar run of the day, trimming the deficit to 3-1.
Bridgewater nearly batted through the lineup twice in the second, pounding out 12 hits in the inning en route to 13 runs to take a 16-1 lead. The inning was highlighted by a bases-clearing triple from Anderson and a three-run homer from Hinegardner as the Eagles registered four extra-base hits during the frame. The home-half of the second lasted more than 20 minutes.
Sweet Briar nicked the Eagles for a single run in the third to finalize the scoring and hand the Eagles a 16-2 win and a doubleheader sweep.
Four players tallied multi-hit efforts with Anderson's 3-for-3 effort leading the way. Anderson drove in a career high five runs and scored three times. Jenkins also tallied two hits to run her hitting streak to 14 games. Aside from Anderson and Jenkins, Hinegardner ran her home-run hitting streak to three games.
Lutz picked up the win after allowing two runs on five hits over the first three innings of the game. Haley Harris pitched two no-hit innings in relief to close out the win.
Amanda Terry went 2-for-3 in the nightcap with one RBI. Molly Langford was tagged with the loss after allowing 16 runs on 17 hits.
Bridgewater returns to action on Tuesday against Mary Baldwin. Start time against the Fighting Squirrels is set for 3:30 p.m.
