Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport registered a goal in each half to defeat the Bridgewater Eagles by a 2-0 score in non-conference field hockey action at the Captains Turf Field on Wednesday evening.
The Captains were the highest vote-receiving team among the team's that were unranked in this week's National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Poll.
Christopher Newport (7-4) controlled play early in the contest, firing a number of shots at the cage but Amanda Harper was up to the challenge, making a pair of saves before the Eagles went on the attack.
Bridgewater earned a corner early in the 15th minute and fired numerous shots at the Captains but the Eagles couldn't break through as the game remained scoreless.
In an evenly played first half, the host Captains took the lead late in the opening frame. Alexa Weaver's shot cut through the left side of the Bridgewater defense and found the back of the net to put the Captains out in front, 1-0, which is how the score would remain at the intermission.
Christopher Newport owned a slim 8-7 edge in shots in the first half while each team had five penalty corners.
At the start of the second stanza, the Eagles went on the offensive. Bridgewater (6-7) ripped a pair of shots at the cage over the first few minutes of the second half, but the Eagles couldn't find the back of the net as the host Captains remained in front by a 1-0 score.
The Captains added a goal later in the second half off of a corner. Allie Hackbarth found Taylor Williams and Williams beat Harper with a shot to extend the CNU lead to 2-0 with under 10 minutes to play.
Over the final nine-plus minutes of the game, both teams went down without much at the offensive end as the Captains defeated Bridgewater by a 2-0 tally.
Christopher Newport was led offensively by Belle Tunstall's six-shot evening. Weaver added a goal on four shots as the Captains turned in a 17-11 shots advantage in the game.
Savannah Cummings made eight saves in the win.
Senior Caroline Augsburger and junior Taylor Prillaman each tallied four shots in the loss.
Harper recorded six saves along the way.
Bridgewater returns to action on Tuesday at Shenandoah. Start time against the Hornets is set for 7 p.m.
