Box Score 2 GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman Abby Mills notched a double-double in both matches on the evening as the Bridgewater Eagles volleyball team opened the season on a solid note with a pair of five-set victories over Penn State-Altoona and the host Bullets at the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic.
Bridgewater topped Penn State-Altoona in the opener by a 3-2 margin, before closing out the evening with an identical 3-2 win over Gettysburg.
In the opener, the Eagles ran away with the first set by a 25-15 margin before dropping the second set by a 25-20 tally. Bridgewater stormed back with an easy 25-14 win in the third set before allowing the Lions to even the match up at two sets each after a tough 26-24 loss. The Eagles cruised in the fifth set with an easy 15-2 win to take the first match of the evening. In the final set of the opening match, Bridgewater hit at a blistering .900 attack percentage with nine kills on 10 total attacks.
Mills led the way for the Eagles in the first match, posting her first career double-double in the win. The freshman tallied 11 kills and racked up a dozen digs along the way to help lead the Eagles.
Senior Katie Long paced the Bridgewater attack with a team-high 22 kills. Long hit at a team-best .288 clip in the match and added nine digs and three blocks.
Senior Lindsay Kallam posted 29 assists for the Eagles in the win, while fellow senior Mara Hogan led the Bridgewater defense with a team-high 28 digs. Hogan also added four service aces, while her service efforts were matched by those of freshman Chelsea Owensby who also tallied four service aces in the win.
In the nightcap, the Eagles again got out in front early, this time with a 25-22 win before allowing Gettysburg to take the second set by an identical 25-22 tally. Bridgewater ran away with the third set, earning a 25-12 win. Gettysburg forced the fifth-set tiebreaker with a hard-fought 25-23 win in the fourth, before Bridgewater took the final set by a 15-10 margin to complete the Friday evening sweep.
Bridgewater again set a solid offensive pace in the fifth set, hitting at an outstanding .458 clip, while the Eagles were also strong in set three, hitting at a .348 attack percentage.
Mills notched her second double-double of the evening with a solid effort against the host Bullets. The Fairfax, Va. native registered a dozen kills to go along with 21 digs to round out an impressive opening night.
On the offensive end, it was Long leading the way again for the Eagles. The Floyd, Va. native tallied 17 kills in the win.
Junior Megann Grimes was also in double figures on the attack, notching 13 kills in the match. Grimes also tallied a team-high three blocks in the win.
Kallam was again impressive as the Eagles' main distributor. The senior led the way with 51 assists and also added nine digs along the way to just miss posting a double-double effort.
Hogan led the Eagles defense with 28 digs, while sophomore Nikki Snyder added 14 digs in the Friday evening finale.
Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday afternoon when it wraps up play at the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic. The Eagles tangle with Washington College at noon before closing out the weekend with a 2 p.m. affair against Penn State-Harrisburg.
