Offense Explodes in Doubleheader Sweep at Sweet Briar

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AMHERST, Va. - In a conference twinbill at Sweet Briar, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team pounded out 27 runs on 31 hits as the Eagles swept a doubleheader from the host Vixens on Tuesday afternoon.

Bridgewater won the first game by a 9-0 score before rolling in the nightcap by an 18-0 tally.

In the opener, Bridgewater got on the board with a single run in the first inning and proceeded to blow the game open with a big effort in the second.

Junior Kasey Anderson led off the inning with a single and swiped second and third before she was pushed home by a Karie Burgess bunt single to put the Eagles out in front, 1-0.

Sweet Briar looked to respond in the bottom of the inning but left a pair of runners on base as the Eagles held on to a 1-0 advantage.

In the top of the second, Bridgewater blew the game open with four runs to take a commanding 5-0 lead after one-and-a-half innings of play.

Freshman Brooke Throckmorton drilled a one-out double and was pushed home on a Sarah Goodman single to put the Eagles up 2-0. Anderson reached on a fielder's choice and swiped second base before being driven in by a Haley Lloyd double to extend the Bridgewater lead to 3-0. Lloyd was plated on a Burgess double before senior Melanie Lamb rounded out the scoring in the frame with a single to score Burgess as the Eagles owned a 5-0 advantage after the top of the second.

Both teams went down scoreless in the third and fourth before Bridgewater used a big fifth inning to effectively put the game away.

Lamb opened the inning with a single to put an early runner on and was driven home two batters later on a two-run blast from the bat of Aven Thomas as the Eagles extended their lead to 7-0.

Following a groundout, Throckmorton belted a single up the middle to put a runner on base with two away. During the next at-bat, freshman Elizabeth Keech stung a ball to left field and the Vixens left fielder couldn't get to it and the ball rolled to the fence as Keech rounded the bases for an inside-the-park home run to push the Bridgewater lead to 9-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, freshman Brianna Cox shut the Sweet Briar bats down to secure a 9-0 win for the Eagles.

Throckmorton paced the Bridgewater offense with a 3-for-3 effort and two runs scored. Lamb, Burgess and Anderson each added multi-hit games to help lead the way for the Eagles attack.

Senior Heather Jenkins tossed the first three innings to pick up the win in a predetermined start. Cox pitched the last two innings of action as the two combined for a two-hit shutout.

Bridgewater scored early and often in the nightcap en route to an 18-0 win.

Anderson opened a four-run first with a single and then swiped second to put an early runner in scoring position. The junior scored two batters later on a double from the bat of Burgess to put Bridgewater up 1-0. Burgess scored one batter later on a Lamb single before back-to-back singles from Jenkins and Thomas pushed home two more runs to put Bridgewater out in front 4-0 after the top of the first.

The Eagles added two more runs in the second before a nine-run third inning blew the game wide open. Bridgewater pounded out two extra-base hits in the third before a Brea Hinegardner three-run blast rounded out the scoring in the inning to put the Eagles out in front 15-0.

Bridgewater scored three more runs in the fourth off of a bases-clearing double from the bat of Kelsey Limbert to round out the scoring and hand the Eagles an 18-0 win in the nightcap.

Anderson led the Bridgewater offense with three hits on the game as the Eagles pounded out 18 hits in the win.

Thomas picked up the win in a predetermined start. The senior allowed one hit across the first three innings of play to secure the victory.
