BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Bridgewater College women's tennis team took a 3-0 lead after doubles play and went on the defeat Virginia Wesleyan, 7-2, Saturday afternoon in an ODAC match.
The Eagles, ranked No. 20 in the current ITA South Atlantic Region rankings, improved to 14-3 overall and 7-2 in the ODAC.
Bridgewater's Katie Gordon and Marla O'Bryan had a tough match at No. 1 doubles as they needed a tiebreaker to defeat Sara Yousif and Victoria Ryherd, 9-8.
Brittany Wilson and Olivia Stone had an easier time at No. 2 doubles as they downed Stephanie Bittner and Hannah Parent 8-1.
At No. 3 doubles, Miranda Donovan and Rita Murphy turned back Mia Proctor and Rachel Calkins 8-4 to complete the sweep.
Gordon was solid at No. 1 singles as she defeated Yousif 6-2, 6-1.
The Eagles controlled play at the bottom of the ladder to close out the match. Donovan blanked Calkins 6-0, 6-0 at Mo. 6 singles to give Bridgewater the clinching fifth point.
At No. 4, Jessie Mitchell turned back Bittner 6-4, 6-4 and Stone won in three sets over Parent at No. 5 singles. Stone won the first set 6-4 before losing the second set 7-5. The match was decided by a tiebreaker that Stone won by a close 11-9 score.
The Marlins' Procter won at No. 3 singles as Wilson retired after the two players split sets. At No. 2 singles, Ryherd stopped BC's O'Bryan 6-4, 6-3.
