BRIDGEWATER, Va. – In a conference twinbill at the Jopson Softball Field, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team used a two-run homer in the opener to secure a game-one victory before falling in the nightcap to settle for a split on Friday afternoon against the visiting Shenandoah Hornets.
Bridgewater (10-8, 2-2 ODAC) was victorious in game number one by a 2-0 score and fell by a 3-1 tally in game two of the day.
Both teams locked up in a classic pitchers' duel across the first three innings of play as the game remained scoreless in a quick start.
Bridgewater starter Heather Jenkins put the Hornets away in order in the top of the fourth before the Eagles responded in a big way in the bottom of the frame.
Senior Melanie Lamb belted a one-out single down the left field line but remained at first base after a strikeout put the second out of the inning on the board for the Eagles. After watching the count run to 0-2, senior Aven Thomas blasted a homerun down the line in left field to put the Eagles in front by a 2-0 tally.
Shenandoah (16-12, 6-6 ODAC) looked to answer in the fifth and sixth after putting runners on board in both innings, but Jenkins kept the Hornets off of the scoreboard across the final three innings of the contest as the Eagles rolled to a 2-0 victory in the opener.
Thomas' 1-for-2 effort led the way for the Eagles offense as Bridgewater tallied just three hits in game one. Lamb and Karie Burgess recorded the other two hits in the opener for the Bridgewater bats.
Jenkins secured win number seven of the season in convincing fashion. The senior allowed just two hits in a shutout effort. With the shutout victory, Jenkins now resides in a tie for the career shutouts lead with 18. The Locust Grove, Va. native fanned five batters in the win.
Leadoff hitter Brittany Guepe and first baseman Lauren McCabe tallied the lone hits of the game for Shenandoah in the loss.
In the circle, Stephanie Cameron was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs on three hits in four innings of work. Cameron struck out 10 in a losing effort.
Both teams remained off of the scoreboard over the first five innings of the second game before the Hornets got on the board with a three-run sixth to a take a 3-0 lead.
Bridgewater's bats were cooled in the second game until a solo blast from the bat of Brea Hinegardner in the bottom of the seventh handed the Eagles their lone run in a 3-1 loss.
Hinegardner and fellow junior Kasey Anderson tallied the lone hits for Bridgewater in game two.
Thomas picked up the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits across 5.2 innings of action. Freshman Brianna Cox recorded the final four outs of the game and allowed no hits in relief of Thomas.
Three Shenandoah players tallied multi-hit games as the Hornets pounded out seven hits in the win.
Cameron came in and tossed the final three innings of the game for Shenandoah and picked up the win in relief of starter Megan Tripp. Tripp allowed just one hit in the first four innings of the game, while Cameron allowed one run on Hinegardner's solo homer.
Bridgewater is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Sweet Briar for a twinbill with the Vixens. Start time is set for 3:30 p.m.
