ROANOKE, Va. - Hollins University slipped past Bridgewater College, 5-4, Thursday in a key ODAC women's tennis match.
Hollins is now 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the ODAC while the Eagles drop to 10-2, 3-2 in conference play.
Hollins grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Karen and Priscilla Montoya won a tough 8-5 match at No. 1 over Bridgewater's Katie Gordon and Marla O'Bryan and Victoria Coffee and Sarah McCormick defeated Olivia Stone and Brittany Wilson 8-2 at No. 2.
Bridgewater picked up a point when Miranda Donovan and Rita Murphy downed Caitlin Hoerr and Abigail Minor 8-1.
Hollins salvaged the split it needed in singles play to win the match, 5-4. Hollins won at the top of the ladder while the Eagles picked up wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6.
Donovan needed three sets to defeat Samantha Hopkins 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 6 singles. Bridgewater's Stone blanked Hoerr 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and Jessie Mitchell stopped McCormick 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4.
Coffee won 6-1, 6-1 over Wilson at No. 3 singles and the Montoya tandem picked up a pair of hard-fought wins at the top two spots.
Karen Montoya handed Gordon a close 6-4, 6-4 loss at No. 1 singles and Priscilla Montoya battled past O'Bryan in split sets, winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
