Box Score 2 LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior pitcher Heather Jenkins tossed the second perfect game in program history to lead the Bridgewater Eagles softball team to a 2-0 victory in game one against the Randolph WildCats, while the Eagles made a number of miscues in the nightcap in a 2-1 loss.
In the opener, both teams struggled to find any offensive rhythm as the game remained scoreless through six complete. Bridgewater looked to get on the board in the second, but stranded a pair of base runners to keep the game at a scoreless deadlock.
Bridgewater (9-7, 1-1 ODAC) finally busted the game open in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead. Senior Melanie Lamb drilled a pitch over the left field fence to open the inning and hand the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Lamb's blast was her third of the season. Following a strikeout, senior Aven Thomas belted a double down the left field line to put a runner in scoring position for the Eagles. Two batters later, freshman Haley Lloyd drilled a pinch-hit single to left field, driving in Thomas to put the Eagles ahead 2-0.
In the bottom of the frame, Jenkins did what she did through the first six innings by retiring the side in order in the seventh to secure a 2-0 victory in the opener.
Thomas led the Bridgewater offense in the win with a 2-for-3 outing as the Eagles pounded out six hits in the opener.
Jenkins pitched what could be argued as her finest performance in the Crimson and Vegas Gold. The senior retired 21 straight batters to post the second perfect game in program history. Bridgewater's last perfect game came from the arm of Lisa Rhodes in 2004 in a 6-0 victory over Randolph-Macon. Jenkins fanned three batters and accomplished the feat on just 73 pitches.
In the circle, Randolph hurler Logan Carter was tagged with the loss. Carter allowed two runs on six hits in a complete-game effort while striking out eight.
Randolph took an early lead on the Eagles in the second inning of game two with a single run in the frame. Rachel Hickman belted a one-out single before being pushed home on a Hannah Cook single to put the WildCats out in front, 1-0.
Bridgewater looked to get on the board in the fifth inning, but stranded a runner at third base in the frame to keep the WildCats in front by a run.
In the bottom of the fifth, Randolph scored an unearned run to build a 2-0 lead after a fielding error on a sacrifice bunt allowed the WildCats to net an insurance run. Brittany Willingham singled to lead off the inning, before Brittney Via reached on a throwing error on a sacrifice situation to put runners at first and second. Two batters later, Willingham was plated on a Patti Vinson groundout to put the WildCats in front by a 2-0 tally.
Bridgewater finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth with a single run. Lloyd led the inning off with a double to the right field gap before scoring on a Karie Burgess single to trim the Randolph lead to 2-1. Bridgewater proceeded to load the bases with no outs, but the WildCats worked their way out of the jam and forced an inning ending double play to keep a one-run lead.
After holding the WildCats off the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth, Bridgewater looked to respond but stranded a runner at first as Randolph secured a 2-1 win in the nightcap.
Six Eagles players tallied a hit each in the loss, while Burgess' 1-for-3 effort with one RBI led the way for the Bridgewater offense.
Thomas was tagged with the loss for the Eagles in the circle. The senior allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings of action.
Willingham and Cook each belted out two hits to pace the Randolph offense, while starting pitcher Kristen Hutchinson earned the victory in the circle after allowing just one run in four innings of work. Carter picked up the save by retiring the final batter of the game.
Bridgewater is back in action on Tuesday at Sweet Briar. Start time against the Vixens is set for 3 p.m.
