Softball Splits with Defiance and St. Norbert

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – On the opening day of the 2013 Rebel Spring Games, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team split a pair of contests against Defiance and St. Norbert. In the opener, the Eagles used a two-run homer and a two-run single to take home a 4-0 victory over Defiance before falling by a 3-2 score in the nightcap.

Bridgewater wasted little time in putting a pair of runs on the scoreboard following two outs to open the first inning. Sophomore Amanda Lutz stung a single to right field before senior Melanie Lamb drilled the first pitch she saw over the centerfield fence to put the Eagles ahead 2-0 after the top of the first.

Starting pitcher Heather Jenkins held Defiance in check in the early part of the game before the two teams locked into a pitcher's duel in the middle innings. Defiance threatened in the third after an error and a single put two runners on base, but Jenkins worked her way out of the jam to keep Bridgewater's 2-0 lead in tact.

Following a scoreless fourth and fifth, the Eagles opened up their lead in the sixth. Lutz tallied her second hit of the game to put a runner on with one away. Lamb followed with a double down the left field line to put runners at second and third as the Eagles threatened to add a few more insurance runs. After a Jenkins groundout, freshman Karie Burgess blooped a single to right centerfield, plating Lutz and pinch runner Sarah Goodman to extend the Bridgewater lead to 4-0.

Freshman hurler Brianna Cox entered the game for the Eagles in the sixth and slammed the door over the final two innings to preserve a 4-0 victory for Bridgewater in the opening game of the day.

Lutz and Lamb each posted two-hit games to pace the Eagles while Lamb and Burgess led the way with a pair of two-RBI efforts.

Jenkins earned the win, allowing two hits in five innings of shutout action while striking out six. Cox slammed the door in relief, allowing no runs on one hit in two innings.

Three Defiance players tallied a hit each, while Kailea Holbrook picked up the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits across six innings of action.

In the nightcap, the Eagles stuck a run on the board in the first inning before adding a run in the third off of a Lamb solo blast to post a 2-1 lead but a two-run sixth from St. Norbert proved to be the difference as the Green Knights defeated Bridgewater by a 3-2 tally.

Bridgewater stuck a run on the board in the first inning to take an early one-run advantage. Anderson led the inning off after reaching on an error and swiped second base. Two batters later, Anderson was driven in on a Burgess single to put the Eagles out in front 1-0.

St. Norbert knotted the game up in the third inning when Steph Brunette singled to knock in Jena Paul, knotting the game up at a run each after two-and-a-half innings of play.

The Eagles wasted little time in tying the contest up in the bottom part of the inning. After back-to-back strikeouts to open the inning put the Eagles in a bind, Lamb belted her second home run of the day, this time a solo shot over the left field fence, to put the Eagles back in front 2-1 after three complete.

Both teams went down without a run in the fourth and fifth before St. Norbert took the lead for good in the sixth. The Green Knights grounded out to the shortstop twice to open the sixth but a double from Morgan Buboltz put a runner in scoring position with two outs. MacKenzie Hazen followed with a single to drive in the pinch runner before Jessica DeMeuse singled to score Hazen and hand St. Norbert a 3-2 lead.

The Eagles didn't have an answer in the sixth and seventh as Bridgewater fell by a 3-2 score and saw its three-game winning streak come to an end.

Four Eagles tallied a hit each in the loss, with Lamb's solo blast leading the way.

Senior Aven Thomas picked up the loss in the circle, allowing three runs on four hits across six innings of work. Cox tossed the final inning for the Eagles and allowed just one hit.

Brunette tallied two hits to pace the way for the Green Knights offense.

Morgan Rusch earned the win, allowing two runs on four hits in a complete game effort.

Bridgewater is back in action on Wednesday when it tangles with Mount Union and Coast Guard. First pitch against Mount Union is set for 9 a.m.
