Bridgewater Closes Out Season With 10-3 Victory

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Bridgewater College closed out its baseball season with a 10-3 victory Sunday afternoon over the University of Mary Washington.

The contest was the final home game for four seniors - Devon Snow, Alex Nuttycombe, Kevin Chandler and Jay Thompson - who helped lead the Eagles to just the second 30-win in program history.

With the victory, Bridgwater is 31-14 on the season. The Eagles will await the selection of the NCAA tournament field to see if they recevie an at-large selection to the postseason.

The Eagles put a run on the board in the second when Derrick Walling singled in a run and then took control of the contest with six runs in the bottom of the third.

With one out, Bryan Sanderson walked and moved to third on a hit-and-run single by Andrew Hacker. Nuttycombe walked to load the sacks and Thompson singled through the right side to drive home two runs, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Zach Hynes and Jonathan Mason delivered back-to-back run-scoring singles to push the lead to 5-0. Walling singled in a run for his second RBI of the game and Snow plated a run with a sacrifice fly, making the score 7-0.

Mary Washington scored two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to pull within 7-3.  In the fourth, Seth Jordan plated a run with a double to center and later scored on a single by Connor Finnerty. Mary Washington took advantage of two BC errors in the fifth to score an unearned run to make the score 7-3.

Bridgewater scored its final run in the seventh. Hynes singled home a run to make it 8-3 and Mason followed with a two-run homer, his seventh of the season, to give the Eagles a 10-3 lead.

 Chandler worked the first three innings to pick up the victory, his eighth on the season against just one loss. He allowed three hits and struck out two. Corey Armentrout and Robert Gallet combined for four shutout innings to end the game.

Hynes and Mason led the offense as each finished 3-for-4 on the day. Hacker and Walling each added two hits.
