Box Score 2 LYNCHBURG, Va. - Lynchburg College took control of the ODAC regular season race by sweeping Bridgewater 4-0 and 18-9 Saturday afternoon.
The teams entered Saturday's twinbill tied for the top spot in the standings, but the Hornets now hold a two-game lead as the season heads into the final stages.
In the opener, Lynchburg scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Hornets loaded the bases with one out. The first run scored when Dan Savage reached on an error and then Dustin Arrowood cleared the sacks with a triple to rightcenter, giving the hosts a 4-0 lead.
BC starter Kevin Chandler allowed just three hits the rest of the way as he finished with a complete game, but the Eagles' offense was never able to get untracked. Robert Garrett and Brandon Miller combined on a five-hit shutout to put Game 1 in the books for the Hornets.
Game 2 started just like the opener as the Hornets scored four runs in the bottom of the first Richard Palase led off with a walk and scored on a double by Michael Kenah. After another walk, Savage belted a three-run homer to give the Hornets a 4-0 lead.
The Eagles got one run back in the second and then tied the score with three in the third. Devon Snow doubled and scored on a single by Nick Fulk to make it 4-2. Bryan Sanderson then homered to leftcenter tying the score at 4-4.
The Eagles took advantage of some shoddy defense by the Hornets in the fifth and scored five runs. Fulk reached on an error and moved to third on a Sanderson double. Fulk scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Hacker, putting BC on top for the first time. The Hornets made four more errors in the inning and Zach Hynes and Jay Thompson had run-scoring hits as the Eagles took a 9-4 lead.
The lead didn't last long as the Hornets responded with eight runs in the bottom of the frame. Savage started the comeback with a three-run homer off the scoreboard and ended it with a run-scoring single later in the inning as the Hornets regained the lead, 12-9.
Savage destroyed the Eagles in Game 2 with a 5-for-5 day at the plate that included two homers, two doubles and seven RBIs.
Hacker and Fulk finished with three hits apiece to lead the Eagles offense in the second game.
The Eagles are now 22-10 overall and 9-4 in the ODAC. BC is back in action Monday when it hosts nationally-ranked Christopher Newport.
