Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla. – After dropping the opening game of the day in extra innings, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team used a four-run bottom of the seventh to storm back to earn a split in the team's doubleheader against Trine and Bluffton on the final day of the Rebel Spring Games.
In the opener, Trine used a two-run first inning to own an early lead over the Eagles before Bridgewater chipped the lead in half with a single run in the fourth.
Back-to-back walks with one out gave the Eagles a runner in scoring position before sophomore Brea Hinegardner reached on a fielder's choice and a throwing error by the Trine pitcher allowed Heretick to score, cutting the Thunder lead to 2-1 after four complete.
Both teams went down in order in the fifth before Bridgewater tallied another run in the top of the sixth to knot the game at two runs each.
Following a lead-off walk, senior Hillary Rees came in to pinch run for Melanie Lamb, before Rees was moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt with one out. Two batters later, Hinegardner plated Rees on a single up the middle to tie the game at two runs apiece as the contest headed to the final frame.
Trine was able to work a runner into scoring position in the bottom of the seventh, but Bridgewater starter Heather Jenkins was up to the task as she cut down the rest of the Thunder to push the game to an extra set.
Bridgewater couldn't garner a run in the top of the eighth, before Trine came to the plate and drove in the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly to centerfield to hand the Eagles their first loss of the season by a 3-2 score in eight innings.
Hinegardner and Kasey Anderson paced the Eagles with a hit each in the loss.
In the circle, Jenkins picked up the loss allowing three runs on five hits while striking out six to hand the junior her first defeat of the season.
Trine was paced offensively by Carly Searles' 3-for-4 game, while Andi Gasco earned the win, allowing two hits and two runs along the way.
In the second half of the twinbill, Bluffton jumped all over Bridgewater in the top of the first with three runs before the Eagles responded with a three-run inning of their own.
Anderson singled and stole second before being pushed to third base on a fielder's choice to open the inning.
Junior Aven Thomas got the scoring started with a bunt single to the infield to score Anderson, cutting the Bluffton lead to 3-1. Bridgewater scored again during the ensuing plate appearance when Melanie Lamb reached on a fielder's choice and Thomas scored on an error by the shortstop to cut the Beavers' lead to 3-2.
Starting catcher Leigh Lam rounded out the scoring with a groundout to score Lamb to knot the game up at three each after an inning of play.
Following a scoreless second, Bluffton got back on the board with two runs in the third to open a 5-3 lead after two-and-a-half. The Beavers took advantage of two Bridgewater errors to post their two-run third.
Bridgewater responded in the home half of the inning when Jenkins drove a single up the middle to plate Lamb, bridging the gap to a 5-4 Bluffton advantage.
Bluffton answered again with two more runs to own a 7-4 lead which is where the game would stay until the bottom of the seventh.
Junior Sarah Goodman opened the home half of the seventh with a pinch hit single to center field before a single from the bat of Morgan Williams put two runners on with no outs. An Anderson groundout put two runners in scoring position before an Amanda Lutz single through the left side drove in Goodman to cut the Bluffton lead to 7-5.
Thomas followed the Lutz single with one of her own to right field to score Williams to bring the Eagles to within a run with one out.
Lamb kept the rally going with a single up the middle to tie the game at 7-7 before Lam drilled a 1-0 pitch up the middle, scoring Thomas, to hand the Eagles an 8-7 come-from-behind win.
Lam, Lamb and Thomas each paced the Eagles offense with two-hit games, while Thomas and Lam drove in two runs a piece in the win.
Thomas picked up the victory for Eagles, working the final three innings in a relief role to post her third victory of the year. The junior allowed just two hits and no runs in relief of starting pitcher Summer Ramsey.
Lindsey Robertson paced the Beavers offensively with a three-hit game, while Chloe Shell was tagged with a loss after surrendering three runs in just 0.1 innings of work.
Bridgewater is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Averett for a non-conference affair with a Cougars. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
