BRIDGEWATER, Va. –Junior Katie Long recorded 14 kills in another outstanding performance for the Bridgewater volleyball team in a 3-0 win over Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday night in Nininger Hall.
Senior Cadie Castle put up four blocks for the Eagles defense, while Long, Maddy Carter, Bethany Doman, and Megann Grimes each recorded two blocks.
Setter Lindsay Kallam tallied a game-high 25 assists, while libero Casey O'Leary chipped in 13 digs for Bridgewater.
Virginia Wesleyan's setter, Mallory Slade, distributed the ball 24 times and Tempe Martens led the defense with eight digs. Outside hitters Taylor Allen and Kala Guy each recorded eight kills for the Marlins on the evening.
Bridgewater started the first set strong with a kill by Long in the first play of the game. The two teams went back-and-forth until back-to-back kills by Long put the Eagles ahead at a 16-15 tally.. Bridgewater pulled away from Virginia Wesleyan and a service error by the Marlins ended the set victorious for the Eagles, 25-21.
The second set was neck-and- neck until a kill from Long that tied the game, 6-6. The Eagles scored the next three points forcing the Marlins to call a timeout. Bridgewater came out of the timeout strong with three consecutive points making Virginia Wesleyan use another timeout. The Marlins regrouped out of the second timeout to take the lead with a service ace making the score 18-17. Back-to-back kills from Castle and Long put the Eagles back in gear to eventually take the set, 25-19.
A block from Grimes and Doman set the tone right off the bat for the third set. The back-and-forth affair continued until the 12-12 mark when a service ace from Doman pushed the Eagles ahead by a point. Bridgewater controlled the remainder of the set before a kill from Grimes and back-to-back kills from Long ended the set, handing Bridgewater a 25-20 victory.
The Eagles travel to Cambridge, Mass. this weekend for the MIT Quad. On Friday, the volleyball team will take on the host Engineers at 7 p.m. Saturday's matches are against Rivier at 11 a.m. and Western New England at 2 p.m.
