Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Bridgewater College closed out its regular season Sunday afternoon by defeating Guilford College in both ends of a doubleheader to secure the No. 1 seed in this week's ODAC baseball tournament.
The Eagles rallied to win the first game, 13-5 and then shut down the Quakers in Game 2, 7-1.
In the opener, Bridgewater erased a 5-4 deficit with eight runs in the top of the eighth inning.
The Eagles took an early 2-0 lead in the second. Andrew Hacker and Jay Thompson led off the inning with singles and moved up on Brett Howell's sacrifice bunt. Alex Nuttycombe delivered a two-out single, scoring both runners for a 2-0 lead.
Jonathan Mason doubled home a run in the third to make it 3-0, but the Quakers scored four times in bottom of the third and once in the fifth to lead 5-3.
Bryan Sanderson drove home a run in the seventh, making the score 5-4 and setting the stage for the Eagles' eighth inning outburst.
Kevin Kirk and Mason walked and Hacker followed with a bunt single to load the bases. After Thompson popped out, Howell doubled home two runs, giving the Eagles a 6-5 lead. Dustin Arrowood walked to reload the sacks and Nuttycombe singled home a run to make it 7-5. With two outs, an infield error allowed another run to score and kept the inning alive. Kirk walked to force home a run and Mason cleared the sacks with a three-run double, making the score 12-5.
Bridgewater added its final two runs in the ninth on a two-run double by Sanderson.
The Eagles bullpen allowed just one run over the final seven innings in the victory. Tyler Slanovec allowed one run on four hits over four innings of work before turning it over to Christian Armstrong. Armstrong pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win. Kevin Chandler pitched the final 1.1 innings.
Mason led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs. Sanderson was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and Nuttycombe finished with a 3-for-5 day and three RBIs.
In the second game, the Eagles scored five runs in their first at-bat and never looked back.
Sanderson led off the game with a single, stole second and took third on a passed ball. With one, Kevin Kirk walked before Mason drove home Sanderson with an infield single for the game's first run. Hacker then singled to right-center, scoring Kirk and making the score 2-0. An error loaded the sacks and Howell was hit by a pitch, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Arrowood then doubled to center, chasing home two runs for a 5-0 Bridgewater lead.
Guilford got one run back in the bottom of the first, but the Eagles tacked two more on the board in the top of the second.
Mason doubled to center with one out and trotted home on Thompson's two-out double, making the score 6-1. Thompson scored on a double by Howell for a 7-1 Eagles lead.
Freshman Robert Gallet tuned up for the ODAC tournament as the BC starter pitched three innings, a number predetermined prior to the start. Gallet allowed one run on four hits. He struck out one and walked one.
Two more freshmen followed Gallet to the mound. Kyle Henshaw worked two scoreless innings and gave up one hit and Dillon Via allowed one hit in his two scoreless innings on the hill. Senior Jake Wade pitched the final two innings, also allowing no runs.
The Eagles finish the regular season 23-16 overall and 13-3 in the ODAC. Bridgewater will meet Hampden-Sydney in the opening game of the ODAC tournament. Game times for the opening games in the tournament will be announced later this evening.
