Box Score 2 SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Bridgewater Eagles softball team drilled four homeruns and knocked in 35 runs, while a first in Eagles softball history occurred for one Bridgewater pitcher as the Eagles swept host Sweet Briar by 19-0 and 16-0 scores in five innings each.
In the opener, the Eagles tallied four runs to get on the board and take a 4-0 lead over the Vixens.
Sweet Briar went down in order in the home half of the inning, before Bridgewater poured on the offense in the top of the second.
Bridgewater belted two homers in an eight-run second inning to take a 12-0 lead after one-and-a-half. Sophomore Aven Thomas drilled a solo shot with one out in the frame, before senior Kristen Combs hit a grand slam later in the inning as the Eagles batted around in the second.
Following a scoreless third inning from both teams, the Eagles hit around the lineup again, tallying six runs in the fourth to take an 18-0 lead.
Back-to-back doubles from sophomores Melanie Lamb and Morgan Williams highlighted a high-scoring stanza for the Eagles.
Sweet Briar got its second hit of the day in the fourth before Bridgewater knocked in the final run of the opener off of a Lamb single to take the first game of the twinbill by a 19-0 score in five innings.
At the plate, Combs 3-for-4 game with three runs scored and five RBI paced the Bridgewater offense. The Eagles had 14 hits in the game.
Bridgewater starter Heather Jenkins earned the win for the Eagles in the circle, tossing a pre-determined two innings of work. Jenkins faced just six batters and struck out two in the win.
Sweet Briar had a pair of players with a hit each while Anna Newburg picked up the loss in the circle for the Vixens.
In game two, Bridgewater put up double digits in the first inning to explode to an 11-0 lead after half an inning. The 11 run first was highlighted by Lamb's second blast of the day, this one a two-run shot which put the Eagles up 3-0 at the time.
Sweet Briar scraped out two hits in the bottom of the first, but couldn't cut into Bridgewater's 11-0 lead.
The Eagles tallied two runs in the second off of a pop out and a RBI single for Lamb to take a 13-0 lead after two frames.
Bridgewater added an insurance run in the third off of a Sarah Goodman single, before Williams blasted a ball over the fence in the fourth to put the Eagles up 15-0.
During the home half of the third, relief pitcher Amber Marstin accomplished a first in Bridgewater history, by striking out four batters in one inning to mow through the Vixens part of the order.
In the fifth inning, freshman Breaunna Hinegardner wrapped up the scoring with a RBI to finalize the tally at 16-0.
Lamb's 2-for-4 game with four RBI paced the Eagles offense, while Hinegardner chipped in a 3-for-4 performance with a run scored and a RBI.
Thomas picked up the win in the second game, going a predetermined two innings.
Kalyn McCullough led the Vixens at the plate with two hits, while Jordan Pugh picked up the loss in the circle.
Bridgewater is back in action on Sunday when it hosts McDaniel. Sunday's game marks Senior Day and is also Bridgewater's first Score for the Cure game. Action starts at 2:00 p.m.
