Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Sophomore Heather Jenkins threw another gem in the circle in game one, before classmate Aven Thomas controlled the final six innings of play in game two to push the Bridgewater Eagles softball team to a sweep of visiting Lynchburg at the BC Softball Field.
Bridgewater was victorious in game number one by a 4-0 score before prevailing in game two by a 6-2 margin.
Following one-and-a-half scoreless innings in the opening game, Bridgewater got on the board in the second when junior Sarah Heretick took a 0-1 pitch and drilled the foul pole down the left field line, plating Drew Rutledge to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Lynchburg had no answer in its following two innings at the plate before the Eagles added a pair of insurance runs in the fourth.
Junior Hillary Rees got the scoring started with a triple down the left field line, which scored Kristen Combs to extend Bridgewater's lead to 3-0.
After a reliever came in for the Hornets and forced an Aven Thomas groundout, Emily Morris reached on an error by the second baseman, allowing Rees to score pushing Bridgewater's lead to 4-0.
Over the final two-and-a-half innings of action, neither team was able to manufacture much offense as the Eagles were victorious by a 4-0 score in the opener.
Heretick led the Eagles at the plate in the first game with a 2-for-3 outing and two RBI.
In the circle, Jenkins was again brilliant tossing her sixth shutout of the year with a five-hit complete game in the opener.
Lynchburg was led at the plate in game on by a 2-for-3 performance from designated player Cassie Phillips.
Hurler Katie Bruce picked up the loss for the Hornets going 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out four.
Game two saw Lynchburg jump out to an early lead over the Eagles before Bridgewater climbed back into the contest in the middle of the game.
Lynchburg blasted a two-run homerun over the centerfield fence in the first to take a 2-0 lead over the Eagles through half an inning.
Bridgewater answered in the home half of the frame with a run of its own off of a Lauren Childress double to cut the Hornets lead to 2-1.
Game two starter Aven Thomas kept the Hornets off of the scoreboard in the second, before a Rees single to right field plated Jenkins knotting the game up at two each after two stanzas.
Thomas again mowed through the Hornets lineup before the Eagles took the lead in the third off of a solo blast to center field off of the bat of Emily Morris to give Bridgewater a 3-2 advantage.
Both teams went scoreless in the sixth, but Bridgewater's bats weren't finished as the Eagles plated three runs in the fifth to extend their lead to a 6-2 tally.
Bridgewater opened the scoring on a wild pitch to push the lead to 4-2 before an Amber Marstin double to right field pushed in Leigh Lam and Childress to give the Eagles a 6-2 cushion.
Lynchburg loaded the bases in the sixth and harassed the Eagles in the seventh but couldn't garner a run as Bridgewater took game two by a 6-2 tally.
Rees led the Eagles at the plate in game two with a 3-for-4 outing.
Thomas picked up the win in the circle, going the distance allowing two runs on just four hits while punching out nine Lynchburg batters.
The Hornets were led at the plate by four players with a hit each, including Rachel Gallagher's two-run blast which account for all of Lynchburg's scoring on the day.
Tiffany Merrill picked up the loss going 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits.
Currently, the Eagles sit at 18-5 on the season and have an 8-2 mark in ODAC play.
Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday when the team travels to Randolph-Macon for a showdown with the Yellow Jackets.
