Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater's bats were red hot, but defensively the squad committed four errors on the day as the Eagles softball team picked up a non-conference split with visiting Christopher Newport. The Eagles won game one by a 7-5 score before surrendering three home runs in the nightcap to fall 14-7.
Christopher Newport struck first tallying two runs in the top of the second in the opening game to take a 2-0 lead over the Eagles.
In the bottom of the third, Bridgewater responded in a big way when sophomore Heather Jenkins led the inning off with a blast over the left field fence to cut the Captains' lead to 2-1.
Three batters later, Emily Morris knocked a 1-1 pitch over the left center field fence, plating right fielder Aven Thomas to give Bridgewater a 3-2 lead after three.
Christopher Newport responded with a run in the top of the fourth before Leah Cossentino scored on an error to put Bridgewater back up by a 4-3 score after four frames.
Jenkins shut the Captains down in the top of the fifth before the Eagles bats poured in a trio of insurance runs in the home half of the inning.
After a Leigh Lam walk loaded the bases, senior Angela Spinelli was hit by pitch, pushing home Drew Rutledge and extending Bridgewater's lead to 5-3.
Two batters later a Hillary Rees double to the opposite way plated two more runs, pushing the Eagles advantage to 7-3.
Christopher Newport was able to garner two runs in the top of the seventh but it was too little, too late as Bridgewater turned in a 7-5 victory over the Captains in the first half of the doubledip.
Rees led the way in the first game with a 2-for-4 outing, while Jenkins' 1-for-2 effort aided the Eagles at the plate.
Jenkins earned the game one win, going the distance while striking out nine to post her seventh victory of the year.
Chelsea Mitchell led the way for the Captains with a 2-for-4 game at the plate.
Whitney Haller picked up the loss going 4.1 innings, allowing seven runs on five hits.
In game two, it was CNU again striking, this time with a two-run first to put Bridgewater in an early hole.
Bridgewater again responded with a big inning, this time in the bottom of the second to gain the lead over the Captains.
Freshman Kasey Anderson got the scoring started with a single through the left side, to cut the CNU lead to 2-1, before a Thomas double drove in two to put the Eagles up 3-2 after two stanzas.
Christopher Newport responded in the fourth with four runs, forcing Thomas, the game two starter, out of the game.
Bridgewater again brought out the bats in the bottom of the inning, plating two runs off of a Leigh Lam double and an Amber Marstin ground out, but the team still trailed 6-5 after three.
Following a scoreless fourth, the next three innings were all CNU as the Captains put eight runs on the board to bury Bridgewater by a 14-5 tally.
In the team's final plate appearance, the Eagles put together three straight hits, including another Jenkins blast, but it wasn't enough as CNU took game two by a 14-7 score.
Lam's 4-for-4 game at the plate led the way for the Eagles in game two, while Thomas picked up the loss.
Ashley Mani was outstanding in the second game, going 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored. Christopher Newport blasted three homers in the game two win.
In the circle, Elizabeth Holte picked up the complete game victory, striking out a pair in the process.
Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday, March 26 when Roanoke comes to town.
