Box Score HARRISONBURG, Va. - Freshman righthander Robert Gallet pitched seven strong innings and the Bridgewater College Eagles remained undefeated in ODAC play with a 6-2 victory Tuesday at Eastern Mennonite.
Gallet allowed just five hits and one unearned run in his seven-inning stint on the mound. He struck out five batters and walked just one.
The Eagles got on the board with a run in the top of the third. Alex Nuttycombe singled to left, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Nuttycombe scored on a groundout by Devon Snow to put the Eagles on top 1-0.
Bridgewater added another run in the fourth. Jonathan Mason walked and Brett Howell followed with a hit-and-run single to right. Mason scored when Howell's hit skipped past the outfielder.
The score remained 2-0 until the Royals nicked Gallet for a run in the bottom of the seventh. Chris Harpine singled to center, took second on a ball in the dirt and contnued to third on a throwing error by Eagles' catcher Alex Hogge. Harpine scored on a sacrifice fly by Jake Norman, trimming the Eagles lead to 2-1.
Bridgewater got the run back in the top of the eighth. Bryan Sanderson led off with a single and Devon Show followed with a bunt single to put two runners on. Thomas Worley came out of the bullpen to relieve starter Adam Posey and was greeted by Kevin Kirk with an RBI-double, giving BC a 3-1 lead. With runners still at second and third with no outs, Worley worked out of the jam without allowing another run.
The Eagles added some insurance with three runs in the ninth. Christian Armstrong led off with a single and moved to second on a groundout. With one one, Sanderson lined a single through the box to score Armstrong for a 4-1 Bridgewater lead. Sanderson scored on an EMU error and Kirk doubled home a run to put the Eagles on top 6-1.
Kirk led the Eagles with a 3-for-5 day at the plate and three RBIs. Sanderson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one run batted in.
With the victory, the Eagles improved to 13-10 overall and 8-0 in the ODAC. EMI dropped to 6-17 overall and 1-9 in the conference.
