Box Score 2 LYNCHBURG, Va. – In the midst of a busy week of action, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team pounded out 17 runs in two games to earn a doubleheader sweep over conference foe Randolph College. With the victory in game number one, head coach Donnie Fulk earned his 500th career victory.
Bridgewater won game one by a 10-0 score, before claiming the nightcap by a 7-3 tally.
In the first game, the score remained tied through an inning of action before the Eagles put a run on the board in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead.
Bridgewater added a trio of insurance runs in the top of the third on three singles to push its advantage to a 4-0 score through three innings of action.
Following a scoreless fourth inning, Bridgewater added two more runs off of a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly to push its lead to 6-0 through five innings of play.
Randolph was unable to establish any offense in the sixth before the Eagles put four runs on the board in the seventh to take a 10-0 win over the host WildCats.
Seniors Lauren Childress and Drew Rutledge led the Eagles offense with three hits each. Childress drove in three runs in the win as well.
In the circle, sophomore Heather Jenkins went the distance, tossing a three-hit shutout. Jenkins struck out four in the victory.
Randolph was led offensively by three p layers with a hit each, while Amie Hutchinson picked up the loss in the circle, tossing 3.1 innings of action while allowing four runs on nine hits.
Game two started with a two run inning for the Eagles, before the WildCats answered with a run of their own as Bridgewater held a 2-1 lead after the first inning of action.
After a scoreless second, a Drew Rutledge double in the third plated Emily Morris to put an insurance run on the board for the Eagles, extending their lead to 3-1 after three innings.
Randolph cut the Bridgewater lead back to one with a run in the bottom of the fourth, before a Hillary Rees three-run blast over the center field fence pushed the Bridgewater lead to 6-2.
Two batters later, Childress singled, scoring Aven Thomas to extend Bridgewater's lead to 7-2.
Randolph added a run in the bottom of the seventh, but it was too little, too late as the Eagles swept the host WildCats with a 7-3 victory in the second game.
At the plate, four players had multi-hit games for Bridgewater, led by Rees' three-RBI outing.
Thomas picked up the complete game win for the Eagles in the circle, striking out three along the way.
Tianna Strassner led the way offensively for Randolph with a 2-for-4 outing with a pair of runs scored.
Brittany Via earned the loss for the WildCats, tossing five innings of work.
Bridgewater wraps up its eight-game week on Sunday afternoon at the BC Softball Field against Guilford. Action against the Quakers is slated for a 2:00 p.m. start.
