Box Score 2 FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – After dropping the first half of a non-conference twinbill to the Mary Washington Eagles, the Bridgewater Eagles softball team got a solid pitching performance in game two and knocked in three runs to earn a daily split with UMW.
Bridgewater dropped game one by a 5-4 tally in eight innings, before earning a 3-0 shutout victory in the nightcap.
Mary Washington posted two runs in the home half of the first inning to take an early lead over Bridgewater, which would stand until the Eagles answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, tying the game at two each.
Bridgewater gained the lead in the top of the sixth when an Aven Thomas single drove in senior Drew Rutledge to put the Eagles ahead 3-2.
Mary Washington responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-3 lead, before the Eagles answered with a run of their own, knotting the game at four each.
In the home half of the seventh, UMW couldn't put a run on the board, forcing extras.
After Bridgewater went scoreless in the top of the eighth, Mary Washington tagged a run on the board in the bottom of the frame, handing the Eagles a 5-4 loss in the opening game of the doubledip.
Three Eagles led the way with two hits each, while reliever Amber Marstin picked up the loss, allowing one run over two innings of work. Starting pitcher Summer Ramsey allowed four runs over five innings to pick up the no-decision.
Mary Washington was led at the plate by a 4-for-4 performance from Morgan Lamon.
In the circle, Nicole Black picked up the victory, tossing 3.1 innings of work.
In game two, the Eagles followed a scoreless first frame with back-to-back doubles in the top of the second to drive in three runs to take a 3-0 lead over top of Mary Washington.
Bridgewater starting pitcher Heather Jenkins was exceptional in the circle holding the Eagles in check over the final six innings of action, as the Eagles earned a 3-0 victory to pick up the daily split.
Hillary Rees led the way for the Eagles in game two with a 2-for-3 outing. Rees drove in a pair of runs and also scored once to aid the Bridgewater offense.
In the circle, Jenkins went the distance, allowing just four hits while striking out five.
Mary Washington was led offensively by a quartet of players with one hit each.
Starting pitcher Nicole Black picked up the loss, allowing three runs in three innings of work. Reliever Danielle Cunetta pitched four innings of shutout action for the Eagles.
Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday afternoon when it travels to Randolph for a conference twinbill with the WildCats.
