Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. – On a day when the Bridgewater Eagles (22-3, 17-3 ODAC) women's basketball squad honored its five seniors, the Eagles ran out to a big halftime advantage before cruising to a 77-38 win over Emory & Henry (4-20, 3-17 ODAC) to clinch a share of the regular season ODAC Championship.
Bridgewater tied the school record for the most regular season victories in school history, by notching its 22nd win of the year behind a season-best 57.4% performance from the field.
At the start of the game, all five seniors earned the nod, including Lacey Barnett (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial), who has been absent from the starting lineup due to a career-ending injury suffered during the 2009-10 season. The Eagles controlled the tip, with the ball finding its way into the hands of Barnett at the far end of the floor, before a timeout got the senior a standing ovation from the home crowd.
Both teams traded scores in the opening minute, before a 19-2 Bridgewater run gave the Eagles a 21-4 advantage with 14:14 to play in the first half.
Following an early timeout from the Eagles, Emory & Henry used a five-point burst over the next 45 seconds to cut the Bridgewater lead to a dozen at a 21-9 tally.
Over the game's next nine minutes, Bridgewater used a 16-1 run to build a then-game high 27-point lead at a 37-10 margin with 4:48 to play in the opening frame.
Emory & Henry was able to outscore the Eagles over the final five minutes of the half, but it was Bridgewater taking an enormous 41-16 lead into the locker room.
The Eagles used a 26-to-6 advantage in the paint to run out to a 25-point halftime lead as a number of Wasps miscues proved costly in the first 20 minutes.
At the start of the final frame, sloppy play from Bridgewater allowed Emory & Henry to keep the game at around the 25 point halftime deficit, until a pair of layups from Holly Morgan (Staunton, Va./Buffalo Gap) and Brittani Criss (Upper Marlboro, Md./Largo Senior) pushed the Eagles lead to 30 points for the first time at a 66-36 gap.
Emory & Henry responded with a bucket at the other end, but a Criss free throw with 6:51 to play opened an 11-0 game-ending run to propel the Eagles to a 77-38 victory over the visiting Wasps.
Bridgewater destroyed the Wasps in the paint, owning a 48-to-14 advantage, while also turning in a 39-to-7 advantage in bench scoring as every Bridgewater player saw action in the regular season finale.
Junior Jessica Mullen (Purcellville, Va./Loudon Valley) paced the Eagles offense with 17 points in just 17 minutes. Senior Jordan Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) knocked in 16 for the Eagles while fellow senior Emileigh Lambert (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) also netted double figures with 10 points.
On the glass, the Eagles dominated the Wasps, owning the boards by a 48-to-30 margin behind Criss' career-high nine rebounds.
Emory & Henry was led offensively by a 15-point outing from Jalan McPherson. The Wasps shot at a 21.7% clip in the loss.
Before the game, Barnett, Burkholder, Criss, Lambert and Bianca Booker (Blackstone, Va./Nottoway) were honored as part of Senior Day festivities.
The game also marked Bridgewater's edition of the WBCA PinkZone game.
With the victory, the Eagles wrap up the regular season with an unscathed 11-0 record in Nininger Hall and will take a 10 game winning streak into next week's ODAC tournament.
Bridgewater will enter the 2011 ODAC Championships as the #2 overall seed and faces off against Guilford College in the opening round game on Thursday evening in Salem, Va. Action from the Salem Civic Center is slated for a 6:00 p.m. tip off.
