Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Va. – With under a minute
left in regulation, a shot from the stick of freshman Colleen
Dickson (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) was mishandled off of the
post by the Virginia Wesleyan goalkeeper, giving the Bridgewater
Eagles (7-2, 2-0 ODAC) field hockey team to a 2-1 win in conference
action at Mapp Field.
In a game that started in a steady rain, the Eagles took an
early lead when senior Brianna Jacques
(Orange, Va./Orange) took a high pass from Leah Cossentino
(Marriottsville, Md./Glenelg) and put it in the back of the cage to
give Bridgewater a 1-0 lead.
Following 17 minutes of scoreless action, the Marlins (0-10, 0-3
ODAC) knotted the game up at one each when Allie Lanna put a Nikki
Cuthbert pass in the back of the net to even the score with 1:27 to
play in the opening frame.
Both teams battled, with the Marlins controlling portions of the
second half, before Dickson broke free on the far side of the
field. The freshman's shot caromed off the far side post, before
the Virginia Wesleyan keeper mishandled the ball and put it in the
cage, putting Bridgewater ahead for good at a 2-1 tally.
Bridgewater outshot Virginia Wesleyan by a 12-to-5 margin,
including an 8-to-2 discrepancy in shots on goal.
Junior Taylor
Waddell (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) picked up the win for
the Eagles. The junior turned away one shot Virginia Wesleyan shot
in the win.
Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday when the team travels
to Frostburg State.
