Dickson Goals Lift Field Hockey to 2-1 Win Over Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – With under a minute left in regulation, a shot from the stick of freshman Colleen Dickson (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) was mishandled off of the post by the Virginia Wesleyan goalkeeper, giving the Bridgewater Eagles (7-2, 2-0 ODAC) field hockey team to a 2-1 win in conference action at Mapp Field.

In a game that started in a steady rain, the Eagles took an early lead when senior Brianna Jacques (Orange, Va./Orange) took a high pass from Leah Cossentino (Marriottsville, Md./Glenelg) and put it in the back of the cage to give Bridgewater a 1-0 lead.

Following 17 minutes of scoreless action, the Marlins (0-10, 0-3 ODAC) knotted the game up at one each when Allie Lanna put a Nikki Cuthbert pass in the back of the net to even the score with 1:27 to play in the opening frame.

Both teams battled, with the Marlins controlling portions of the second half, before Dickson broke free on the far side of the field. The freshman's shot caromed off the far side post, before the Virginia Wesleyan keeper mishandled the ball and put it in the cage, putting Bridgewater ahead for good at a 2-1 tally.

Bridgewater outshot Virginia Wesleyan by a 12-to-5 margin, including an 8-to-2 discrepancy in shots on goal.

Junior Taylor Waddell (Reedsville, Pa./Indian Valley) picked up the win for the Eagles. The junior turned away one shot Virginia Wesleyan shot in the win.

Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday when the team travels to Frostburg State.
