Box Score 2 BRIDGEWATER, Va. – In the regular season
finale at the BC Softball Field, the Bridgewater Eagles (31-8) used
solid pitching and a pair of three-run first innings to claim a
doubleheader sweep over the Southern Virginia Knights (21-9).
Bridgewater won game one by a 3-0 score before taking the
nightcap by a 6-2 tally.
In game one, senior pitcher Ashley Gills was virtually
unhittable, while the Eagles offense used an early spark to take
the game one victory.
Bridgewater got its first of three runs in the home half of the
first when an Emily Morris single
scored Hillary
Rees to put the Eagles ahead 1-0.
During the next at-bat, junior Lauren
Childress drove a 1-1 pitch to centerfield, scoring fellow
junior Leah
Cossentino from third on the sacrifice fly to put the Eagles
ahead 2-0.
The Eagles rounded out their scoring a batter later when an Angela
Spinelli groundout, brought home Morris, pushing the lead to
3-0.
Following Bridgewater's three-run outburst in the first, bats
went silent for both teams as both pitchers locked into a battle in
the circle which eventually culminated in a 3-0 victory for the
Eagles.
At the plate, Bridgewater's bats were silenced for the first
time in 13 games as the Eagles were able to tally a meager three
hits.
In the circle, Gills (11-3) was electric, recording her fifth
shutout win of the year, while allowing just one hit. Gills tied
the single-game strikeouts record by punching out 13 Southern
Virginia batters. During a stretch from the end of the first
through the beginning of the third, Gills struck out five batters
in a row.
With her 13 strikeout performance, Gills is now just one
strikeout shy of tying the career strikeouts record at Bridgewater.
Gills currently has 335 career strikeouts, placing her right behind
all-time leader Marlo Powell ('06). Her 14 career shutouts place
her in a tie for second place on the all-time list, four away from
the top spot.
Southern Virginia squeaked out just one hit, while hurler Kyla
Christmas picked up the loss, allowing three BC runs on three hits.
Game two nearly mirrored the first game, as the Eagles jumped
out to an early 3-0 lead.
Four straight two-out singles allowed the Eagles to get on the
board, with the first run crossing the plate off of a single to
left from the bat of Spinelli. Freshman Aven Thomas followed
Spinelli's single with one of her own which drove in Spinelli
and Childress and extended the BC lead to 3-0.
Bridgewater added an extra insurance run in the third when
another Spinelli single drove in Childress, putting the Eagles up
4-0.
After a scoreless fourth, Southern Virginia answered with a
two-run fifth to cut the Bridgewater lead in half at 4-2.
The Eagles responded with a run of their own off of a Childress
sacrifice fly, to extend the lead to 5-2, which is where the game
would end, earning the Eagles a doubleheader sweep over the
visiting Knights.
Rees, Childress, Spinelli, and Thomas each posted two-hit games
with Spinelli and Thomas driving in two runs apiece. With a hit in
each game, Spinelli extends her career-best hitting streak to 11
games. The 11-game streak is also tied for the top hitting streak
of the season for the Eagles.
Freshman Heather Jenkins
(6-2) got the win in game two. Jenkins tossed a complete-game three
hitter while allowing two runs and striking out eight.
BC rides a 13 game winning streak into the 2010 ODAC Softball
Tournament this weekend.
