BRIDGEWATER, Va. – After winning game one
by an 11-3 score, the Bridgewater Eagles trailed early in game
number two by a 3-0 tally to Randolph-Macon. In the bottom of the
second in game two, sophomore Hillary Rees tagged
a grand slam as part of a five homerun day for the Eagles as BC
swept the visiting Yellow Jackets at the BC Softball Field.
Bridgewater was victorious in game one by an 11-3 score in six
innings before coming from behind twice in the second game to take
a 10-5 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
Game one started with a scoreless first inning for both teams
before the Eagles bats came alive in the second.
Bridgewater led the inning off with back-to-back singles, before
a line out double play put two outs on the board.
Following a Kristen
Combs walk, freshman Heather Jenkins hit
a single to center field which scored pinch runner Ann Komara from
second base and Combs from third to put the Eagles ahead 2-0.
Both teams were again held off of the scoreboard in the third
inning before the Yellow Jackets knotted the game up with a two-run
fourth.
Randolph-Macon took its first lead of the game in the fifth at a
3-2 tally, but the lead was short lived.
Bridgewater notched six runs in the fifth to blow the game open
at an 8-3 tally.
Rees led the inning off with her first long ball of the day,
this one a blast to centerfield to tie the game at three runs
apiece.
Junior Leah
Cossentino followed Rees' blast with a double to left center to
put a runner in scoring position with no outs.
Following the Cossentino double, Emily Morris
drilled a double down the right field line to score Cossentino and
put the Eagles ahead 4-3.
Junior Lauren
Childress then knocked in Morris with a single up the middle to
extend the Eagles lead to 5-3.
Thomas hit a single up the middle two batters later before to
put runners at second and third before a Combs blast to left put
the Eagles up 8-3.
Bridgewater plated three more runs in the sixth after shutting
down the Yellow Jackets in the top of the frame.
Rees led the Eagles off in the sixth with a walk before a
Cossentino double put runners at second and third.
Following the Cossentino double, Randolph-Macon replaced its
pitcher, but the pitcher's time in the circle was short lived as
Morris took her first pitch over the centerfield fence to end the
game, giving BC an 11-3 win.
Morris led the Eagles in game one with a 3-for-4 outing. The
junior drove in four runs and scored twice more to pace the Eagles
lineup.
In the circle, senior Ashley Gills picked up her 10th
win of the year. Gills allowed three runs on six hits and struck
out 10 for the victory. With her 10 strikeouts, Gills is just five
K's away from third place on the career strikeouts list.
Randolph-Macon was led by Michalann Camp's 2-for-3 game.
Kelly Beard picked up the loss for the Yellow Jackets, going
four complete innings, allowing six BC runs on 10 hits.
Randolph-Macon jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the Eagles after the
top of the second, but the Yellow Jackets' lead would again be
short lived as the Eagles stepped to the plate.
Bridgewater loaded the bases off of three singles before Rees'
towering grand slam over the centerfield fence put the Eagles ahead
4-3.
The Yellow Jackets responded in the third with two runs of their
own to take the lead back at a 5-4 score.
In the home half of the fourth, another homerun, this time a
three-run shot from the bat of Childress, put the Eagles ahead 7-5.
Both teams would be held off of the scoreboard in the fifth
before the Eagles tacked three more runs on the board in the sixth.
Jenkins led the Eagles off in the sixth with a single to right
field. Junior Christy
Barron pinch ran for Jenkins and later scored with the aid of
an error to put Bridgewater ahead 8-5.
After a Morris fielder's choice and Childress single up the
middle, Spinelli tagged a double to left field, scoring both
runners to put the Eagles up 10-5 which is where the game would
end.
Childress led the way for Bridgewater in game two with a 3-for-4
game at the plate. The junior reached base safely in both game to
extend her hitting streak to seven straight games, while pushing
her on-base streak to 25 straight games. Childress has reached base
safely in all but three games on the year.
With her grand slam in game two, Rees extended her hitting
streak to a team season-best nine games. The sophomore has hit a
homerun in the last three games for the Eagles.
Senior Lindsay Lam picked
up the win for the Eagles in game two. Lam allowed all five runs on
six hits and struck out 10.
On the week, three players have recorded 10-plus hits as the
Eagles have hit at a .429 clip as a team.
With the victory, Bridgewater extends its winning streak to nine
games.
Bridgewater is back in action tomorrow, Sunday, April 18 when
its travels to McDaniel. Sunday's opening pitch is slated for 2:00
p.m.
