BRIDGEWATER, Va. – In an ODAC
doubleheader at the BC Softball Field, it took the Bridgewater
College (25-8, 10-6 ODAC) bats a few innings to come alive, but
when they did the runs came in a barrage as the Eagles swept
visiting Sweet Briar. In game two, sophomore Summer Ramsey came
two outs from the perfect game, but notched the five-inning no-hit
win for the Eagles.
Bridgewater defeated Sweet Briar (5-28, 0-16 ODAC) 3-0 in game
one as the Vixens hung around against the Eagles early.
Following a scoreless first inning, Bridgewater tallied a run in
the second off of a Kristen
Combs single which plated Aven Thomas, giving
BC a 1-0 advantage.
The game's middle four innings were a pitcher's duel before the
Eagles padded their lead in the sixth.
Junior Lauren
Childress got things started for the Eagles with a double to
centerfield before an Angela Spinelli
single to the circle put runners on first and third for BC.
Freshman Melanie Lamb loaded the bases on a fielder's choice
bunt, before Thomas drove in Childress and Spinelli on a double to
right center to push the Eagles lead to 3-0.
Senior starter Lindsay Lam struck
out the first two Sweet Briar batters of the seventh before forcing
a pop up to end the game, giving Bridgewater a 3-0 victory.
Thomas and sophomore Hillary Rees led
the Eagles at the plate in game one with 2-for-3 outings.
In the circle, Lam picked up the complete-game shutout-victory,
tossing seven innings of four-hit ball while striking out nine.
Third baseman Jordan Pugh was the top Sweet Briar hitter in game
one with a 2-for-3 game.
Sophomore Katelyn Jones picked up the loss for the Vixens, going
the distance allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out
four.
Game two started with a nine-run barrage from the Eagles in the
first inning.
Rees kicked things off with a leadoff bomb to left field to put
Bridgewater ahead 1-0.
Later in the inning after Leah
Cossentino reached via error and stole second, she was advanced
home by a Childress double to put the Eagles ahead 2-0.
One batter later, Spinelli plated Childress on a single up the
middle to make the score 3-0.
Thomas drove Spinelli in two batters later off of a single to
left center, before a Kristen Combs single and Heather Jenkins
double pushed the Eagles lead to 6-0.
Rees got halfway to the cycle during her next at-bat, scoring
Jenkins on a triple before the Eagles plated their final two runs
of the inning via a shortstop error to put Bridgewater up 9-0 after
one inning of play.
Sweet Briar was put down on three straight ground outs in the
second before Bridgewater tallied two more runs in the bottom of
the frame to take an 11-0 lead.
Following a Spinelli groundout, freshman Leigh Lam singled before
a Thomas blast over the centerfield fence put BC ahead 11-0.
Game two starter Summer Ramsey continued to baffle the Vixens
batters in the third, keeping Sweet Briar off of the scoreboard.
Bridgewater unleashed another scoring barrage in the bottom of
the third with five more runs to push the game to a 16-0 tally.
The Eagles opened the inning with three straight singles to load
the bases before a fielder's choice from the bat of Amber Marstin scored
Drew Rutledge to put BC ahead 12-0.
Lam singled during the next at-bat to score freshman Morgan Williams
before a Thomas single plated Marstin and Lam to give the Eagles a
15-0 advantage.
Two more singles on the inning allowed the Eagles to bat around,
and score one more run when a Heather Jenkins single drove in
Thomas to finalize the scoring at 16-0.
Thomas had a monster game at the plate, going 3-for-3 with five
RBI and three runs scored. Jenkins also chipped in with a 2-for-3
game and three RBI. Bridgewater exploded for 20 hits in the
nightcap.
Ramsey was brilliant in the circle for the Eagles. The sophomore
mowed through the first 13 batters of the game in order, before an
Eagles miscue cost her a perfect game. Ramsey recorded the
five-inning no-hitter on an incredible 46 pitches.
The no-hitter was the second in three games for BC and extended
Bridgewater's winning streak to seven games. During the seven game
run the Eagles have outscored their opponents by a 74-5 tally.
BC currently sits at 13-2 on the season at home with four games
remaining on the home slate.
Bridgewater is back in action on Saturday for the home
conference finale against Randolph-Macon. Saturday's opening pitch
against the Yellow Jackets is slated for 2:00 p.m.
