GREENSBORO, N.C. – Bridgewater used
timely hitting to win game one while holding off a late Greensboro
run in game two to earn a doubleheader sweep over The Pride in a
road non-conference tilt. Bridgewater won game one by a 4-2 score,
and held on for an 8-7 win in game two.
With the sweep at Greensboro, the Eagles extend their winning
streak to six games.
Game one saw the two teams battle in a pitcher's duel
through four innings before the Eagles plated three runs in the top
of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead.
Junior Leah Cossentino got things started for Bridgewater in the
visiting half of the fifth with a lead-off double before a Hillary
Rees single put runners at first and second for the Eagles.
Following a strikeout, a passed ball allowed Cossentino to
advance to third while Rees moved up to second base to give the
Eagles a pair of runners in scoring position.
Designated player Emily Morris walked during the ensuing at-bat
before Lauren Childress walked as well, bringing in Cossentino from
third to put BC ahead 1-0.
Later in the inning, freshman Amber Marstin pelted a single to
plate two runs to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead after four and a half
innings of play.
Greensboro responded in the bottom of the frame with a pair of
runs of its own to bring the game to a 3-2 tally.
Both teams were held in check in the sixth inning before
Bridgewater plated a run in the seventh to extend its lead to a 4-2
tally.
In the top of bottom of the seventh, senior Ashley Gills came in
to the game in relief of starter Lindsay Lam and punched The Pride
down in order to earn the save and preserve a 4-2 win for the
Eagles.
At the plate, six Bridgewater batters had a hit a piece, with
Marstin's two-RBI double leading the way for the Eagles
attack.
In the circle, Lam (2-2) picked up the win, tossing six innings
of work while allowing two runs on three hits and striking out six.
Greensboro was led by Kelsey Burkett's 1-for-3 outing.
Burkett tallied a run and plated a pair of runs on a homerun in the
fifth.
Brittany Evans picked up the loss for The Pride. Evans tossed
4.1 innings of work, allowing three runs on three hits.
Game two saw the Eagles jump all over Greensboro early,
establishing a 4-1 lead after three innings of play.
Bridgewater got things started in the top of the first when an
Angela Spinelli single drove in Emily Morris from second base to
put BC ahead 1-0.
In the top of the second, the Eagles added to their lead when a
Morris single plated Cossentino and Rees to build a 3-0 advantage
for Bridgewater.
Bridgewater built its lead to a 4-0 tally in the third when
freshman Morgan Williams drove in Kristen Combs off of a double to
put the Eagles up by four runs.
Greensboro answered in the bottom of the frame with a run of its
own to bring the tally to 4-1 after three innings of play.
The two teams remained scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings
before the Eagles chalked up four runs in the top of the sixth to
build an 8-1 lead.
Greensboro answered with a three run bottom of the inning to
bring the game to an 8-4 tally.
The Pride held the Eagles scoreless in the top of the seventh
before putting together a furious rally in the home half of the
seventh.
Brittany Parsons tallied a three run blast to bring the game to
an 8-7 margin before reliever Becky Schmidt closed the door to earn
the save as the Eagles escaped with an 8-7 win.
Bridgewater got excellent production from the three through five
hitters as Morris, Childress and Spinelli went a combined 7-of-11
at the plate with seven RBI.
In the circle, Summer Ramsey (2-0) picked up the win. Ramsey
tossed 4.1 innings of work, allowing one run on five hits.
Brittany David picked up the loss for The Pride.
Bridgewater is back in action on March 28 when the squad hosts
Mary Washington.
