BRIDGEWATER, Va. – In the squad's
2010 home ODAC opener, the Bridgewater Eagles offense came alive en
route to a doubleheader sweep over the visiting Randolph WildCats.
BC defeated Randolph by a 4-0 score in game one and took game two
by an 11-3 tally in six innings.
In game one, Bridgewater plated runs in the second, third and
fourth innings to defeat the WildCats while starter Ashley Gills
was brilliant in the circle.
In the second inning, BC got on the scoreboard when a Hillary
Rees single through the left side plated Kristen Combs to give the
Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
BC added an additional run in the third when a Combs walk with
the bases loaded scored Lauren Childress to extend the Eagles lead
to a 2-0 tally.
Bridgewater rounded out its scoring in the fourth inning, when a
two-run Emily Morris blast put the Eagles ahead by a 4-0 score,
which is where things would finish as the Eagles took game one over
the WildCats.
Gills (4-1) picked up the win for BC, tossing seven innings of
work. The senior allowed a meager two Randolph hits in a complete
game-shutout performance.
At the plate, Rees and Morris led the way with a pair of 2-for-3
outings. Rees tallied a RBI, while Morris scored once and plated an
additional two runs off of her first homer of the day.
In the circle for the WildCats, Emily Ambrous picked up the
loss. Ambrous tossed five innings of work, allowing all four
Bridgewater runs, while striking out one.
Ambrous and Lindsay Cross led the WildCats at the plate as each
player went 1-for-3 to tally the lone Randolph hits in game one.
Game two saw Randolph jump all over the Eagles early, plating
three runs in the first inning.
Bridgewater stormed back in the bottom of the second to tie the
game up at three apiece. Leah Cossentino plated two runs on a
triple before scoring on a passed ball to knot the game up.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Eagles added two more
runs when a Melanie Lamb homerun cleared the left field fence to
score Morris, giving the Eagles a 5-3 lead.
After reliever Heather Jenkins mowed through the WildCats in the
fourth, BC's bat added three more insurance runs in the
fourth to take an 8-3 lead into the fifth inning.
Bridgewater would keep the WildCats at bay in the fifth and
sixth innings before pouring on three more runs to end the game due
to the eight-run rule in the sixth, winning the contest by an 11-3
score.
Morris added a homerun in game two to plate the first two runs
of the sixth before a Combs double rounded Childress to finalize
the scoring.
Jenkins (3-1) picked up the win in game two, tossing four
innings of one-hit relief. Jenkins relieved starter Lindsay Lam in
the third after the senior allowed three runs on six WildCats hits
in the first two frames.
At the plate, the three and four hitters in the BC lineup led
the way. Morris went a perfect 3-for-3 with a homerun, three runs
scored and three RBI to lead the Eagles offense. Childress,
BC's cleanup hitter, went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run
scored to aid the Eagles' cause.
Randolph starter Ashley Gardner picked up the loss for the
WildCats, allowing five runs in 2 and 1/3 innings of work.
Bridgewater is back in action on Wednesday, March 18 when the
team travels up I-81 for a showdown with crosstown rival Eastern
Mennonite. The opening pitch of tomorrow's doubleheader is
slated for 3:00 p.m.
