Eagles take two from Virginia Wesleyan

Bridgewater College rode two more solid pitching performances Sunday to sweep Virginia Wesleyan College in ODAC softball action. The Eagles won the opener 6-0 and the second game 6-1.

In the opener, the Eagles took command early with four runs in the first with RBI singles by Kaitlyn Bowman and Elizabeth Smith sparking the offense.

The early runs were more than enough for Summer Ramsey as she blanked the Marlins on a four-hitter. Ramsey struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Bridgewater trailed early in the second game but took the lead in the fourth on a two-run single by Elizabeth Smith.

BC added a run in the fourth on a run-scoring groundout by Kaitlyn Bowman and two more scored in the sixth on run-scoring singles by Leah Cossentino and Mallory Sandridge. In the seventh, Smith drove in another run to cap BC's scoring.

Ashley Gills pitched the final 4.1 innings to pick up the win and improve to 9-1 on the season. She struck out eight and allowed just three hits.

The Eagles improved to 23-3 overall and 10-2 in the ODAC. Virginia Wesleyan is 19-11, 7-7 in the ODAC.
